Point Judith is known for its rocky coastline, many shipwrecks, and great fishing. The Point Judith Lighthouse was first constructed in 1810 to help ships navigate and support the growing fishing industry. Point Judith's port of Galilee became one of the largest fishing ports on the East coast after it was stabilized with stone jetties and given two miles of stone breakwaters to provide a refuge for ships. Point Judith also played a key role in the US's defense system during WWII. Sixteen-inch guns and small fortifications were installed here to help defend the country. You can still see some of the now-abandoned structures here.
Point Judith fishing inshore and in the surf can include catches of Black Drum, Croaker, Flounder, Gray Trout (Weakfish), Red Drum, Sheepshead, Speckled Trout (Spotted Seatrout), Striped Bass, and Whiting most of the year. Black Seabass, Cod, Haddock, Pollock, and Tautog (Blackfish) are common species to target on bottom nearshore and offshore. Tunas like Little Tunny and Bluefin, along with Mackerel and Sharks are common over the many wrecks nearshore and out to the deep.
Closer to the canyons many anglers encounter Bigeye Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna while trolling. In the warmest months, a few billfish are caught including Blue Marlin and While Marlin. Deep dropping can produce Tilefish and Swordfish.
