Port Hueneme is the largest commercial port between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Historians believe that the Canalinos Indians used Port Hueneme as a resting place during travels and a launching point for fishing expeditions. A 1,500-foot wharf was constructed here in the 19th century to help the agricultural industry. There is a unique submarine valley right outside of Port Hueneme that quickly drops thousands of feet deep into the Hueneme Canyon, providing excellent fishing inshore and offshore of Port Hueneme.
Port Hueneme fishing offers plenty of inshore opportunities, including Cabezon, Coho Salmon, Lingcod and California Sheepshead. Catching Cabezon is possible from inshore to offshore grounds. This species is highly sought after because of its taste and the challenge it provides anglers. Halibut up to 30 pounds are common nearshore and offshore fishing the Port Hueneme area. Other species you can target offshore are Bluefin Tuna, Kelp Bass, Lincod, and many species of Pacific Snapper. There are also billfish including Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, and Swordfish in the canyons offshore for those who enjoy are challenge.
