Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
The earliest known fishing in the Shark River Inlet likely dates back to the Lenni Lenape Indians, who inhabited the area before European settlement. Archaeological evidence and historical accounts suggest they fished the inlet and river for species like shad, herring, and striped bass, using nets and weirs, as early as the pre-colonial period (before the 1600s). The first documented European reference to the area is the 1686 John Reid map, which names the Shark River. However, by the early 1700s, colonial settlers in Monmouth County were recorded fishing coastal inlets, including Shark River, for sustenance and trade.
Close to the inlet, and inshore is a prime spot for anglers targeting species like striped bass, fluke, bluefish, and weakfish. With the inlet’s strong tidal flows and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean creates ideal fishing conditions much of the year. Nearshore, there are plenty of Black Seabass, Tautog, and Sharks. There are also Bluefin Tuna and False Albacore many months of the year. Offshore in the deep on bottom, and in the canyons, you can find Blueline Tilefish, Golden Tilefish, Swordfish, and Wreckfish. Big Eye Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna are popular targets. In the warmer months there are Blue Marlin and White Marlin that move through.
