Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
North Carolina has some beautiful fishing destinations, but one of the most prolific spots is Shearon Harris Reservoir. This is a 4,100 acre lake, which is located in southwestern Wake and southeastern Chatham County. Although there was always a great deal of natural water flow in the area, the lake was created in approximately 1980 by redirected water from Buckhorn Creek to supply CP&L nuclear plant. The area has been made public as a park since 1999, and since that time, people have flocked here to picnic, hike and fish. If you are interested in Shearon Harris fishing, then this is what you need to know.
There are two public boat ramps; one is near the southern end of the lake off of North Carolina Highway 42, and the other near the northern end by Avent Ferry Road. The biggest draw to Shearon Harris is Bass. The area has a thriving population of local Bass, and some of them can grow to be quite large. This means that keen anglers have the chance to catch trophy-worthy fish in this lake. In fact, the quality of the Bass fishing is nationally recognized. Bassmaster magazine ranked Shearon Harris fishing on its list of the best Bass lakes in 2019. It is also a popular spot for competitors on the Major League Fishing's Bass Pro Tour.
Bass can be caught at all times of the year, but the seasonal population will vary. If you opt for a springtime trip, you will find a lot of young females in shallow water. The shallows are great into the early summer. Once the water gets a little warmer, many of the fish head for deeper waters. This will require a bit more time in a boat, but the possibilities for a good haul remain prevalent all year.
While Shearon Harris fishing is clearly dominated by Bass, that is not the only fish you can catch here. Dedicated anglers can also enjoy an abundant population of Catfish, Crappie, Bluegill, White Perch, and Yellow Perch.
