Striped Marlin Report for Cabo

My son’s Spring Break occurred last week and we decided to take a vacation and try fishing in Cabo San Lucas. I lined up a trip with RenegadeMike for targeting Striped Marlin and Swordfish for Thursday (the 9th) on his customized 31’ Bertram. The fishing had been slow and most of the fleet went to the Pacific side to chase inshore game, but we headed to the 1150 area to see if any early season Stripeys were around.

It was beautiful weather with low 80 degree air temp and we stayed in 72-73 degree water most of the time. It was crazy being so close to shore, yet in deep clear blue water. I thought we were spoiled in Hatteras with short runs to the stream, but this was ridiculous.

Several miles before we got to the area, we put a spread out. Within 5 minutes we had a nice knockdown and short run before coming unbuttoned on the Eye Catcher Lures – Hatteras Classic Series – Voodoo with a Lumo skirt. We trolled the area some more, but with a sore mouth we never found him again. Some frigates and porpoises were working an area not far ahead so we ran a little further and found lots of life, but the tuna were down 100’ and were not interested in our offering.

We found a nice area to do a Swordfish drop and did a couple drift with one bite, but it never came tight. However, the new swordfish rig worked great without any tangles. There was less than a knot of current and an 8# weight worked fine, just couldn’t find any takers interested in our offering. It’s gonna happen this year, just gotta put in the time.

With only about an hour left of fishing time, we were trolling back home and it had definitely been a slow day for bites, but not without effort. Time was running out, but then it happened. I saw a bill and a distinct pectoral fin take a shot at the lure and teaser on starboard. Mackerel were dropped back and it looked like we missed them, but then the port short got hit, once again on the Voodoo. It came tight and we strapped in my 15 year old boy for his first marlin fight.

It took him a few minutes to get used to being strapped in rather than just fighting a fish without a belt, but once he got it figured out he made up some ground. It was about a 30 minute fight, and a clean release at boat side, giving him his first marlin, and a nice sized Striped Marlin to boot.

Here is the video:

On the way back in, we got a photo of my son holding the flag with The Arch in the background. A couple of sea lions hopped on board for a free ride and dinner. We fed them the leftover mackerel and they put on quite the show.

To see the look on my son’s face, I can tell this will be one trip he nor I will ever forget. I want to say thanks to Brian and Eye Catcher Lures for hooking me up with the best Striped Marlin lure that I can personally confirm that works. I also want to say thanks to Mike for giving us a great day on the water. It was nice to talk to such an experienced captain that was willing to share his local knowledge. The next time I am in Cabo, I know exactly who I will be booking a trip with.
