1/17/15 January Backcountry Florida Keys Fishing Report

 | By Seamus on 1/17/2015 7:56:11 PM | Views (291)

We've gotten a tad bit more cool weather recently and looks to continue to keep cool for the next week or so.  Nothing extreme but getting into the low 60s at night more of are regular winter time weather.  As of late there has been a mix of things going on.  Before the front again things had warmed up enough some of the big fish were active again including large sharks, goliath grouper, and tarpon.  Capt. Jim Willcox had a day with several sharks and a huge 300+ lb goliath.  He also reported some redfish action yesterday afternoon.  Now though we had a front last night and water temperatures dropped back into the high 60s.  Today Capt. Rick Stanczyk reported a mixed bag fishing in the everglades.  They had a pick of redfish, a snook, and sheepshead back there around the mainland everglades.  In the afternoon the spanish mackerel bite was good on the last of the incoming tide to put a good finish on the day.  Earlier in the week we had similar action we started with the mackerels then fished the mainland and had some nice snook, redfish, and even a 100 lb 'mud marlin' back there.  Capt Bill Bassett reported catching a handful of snook with his anglers and a young man was very happy that really wanted to catch one.  Capt. Mike Bassett reported good fishing on the patch reefs they had some nice hogfish, snappers, and released some small groupers.  The patch reefs have been a great bet still for half day trips, great fish to take home for lunch or dinner and you don't have to run too far.  Capt. Chris Daly reported good action in the gulf the last few mornings with the spanish mackerel as well.    The weather is very nice even with the latest cold frontal activity it's not getting super cold and the fishing is pretty good as well.  Give us a call if your looking to get out on the water.
