Capt. Bobby Bogan, of the Gambler from Point Pleasant, echoed the complaints of other cod skippers last weekend about the very strong currents created by the full moon. The result was just a pick on every stop, but that shouldn't be a problem this week -- and codfishing should improve accordingly. Last year's good winter cod run led to the best spring fishing in a long time. The biggest problem involves the abundance of spiny dogfish which also seem to be building up in slowly warming offshore waters.
The Gambler is sailing for cod from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bogan will begin Tuesday tautog trips from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. next week.
Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. reported the same problems with strong full moon currents that resulted in slow codfishing Friday and Saturday aboard his Jamaica from Brielle. Sunday's cod special was better. No great quantities, but some larger fish, topped by a 35-pound pollock for Joe Lecates of Medford. The Jamaica sails open for cod at 4 a.m. Friday, 5 a.m. Saturday, and 3 a.m. Sunday.
