Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Joe Florea, President of Aruba Construction, and his good friend and business associate, Rick Muller, from Nautica Management, from South Florida chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Joe is an old friend and customer of mine for 15+ years. We have fished together in the Bahamas and here in South Florida. Today winds were out of the east southeast at 8 mph, seas running 3-4 ft., temperatures in the mid 80’s.
We started out trolling with two plainers down, one with a brown and pink sea and the other with a pink and blue sea witch – both in front of a double hooked Bonito strip. For surface baits we went with two Ballyhoos, one Bonito strip and one yellow Alibi feather.
Our first fish was a 12 lb. Kingfish on one of the plainer rods which Joe reeled. I made another circle around one of our 34 artificial wrecks here in Ft. Lauderdale. The center rigger with the Alibi feather was hooked up as Rick jumped into the fighting chair. Immediately, the line started screaming off of the reel – we knew we had a good fish on!! Dave, our mate, had to clear the cockpit of all other lines before I could back down on the fish as it was spooling us. Forty-five minutes later, Rick, a professional angler, brought a Jack Crevalle weighing 36 lbs to the side of the boat, as Dave gaffed the fish and put him in the boat. From there, we trolled around and caught a total of eight Kingfish, one Mahi Mahi, one Jack Crevalle, one Barracuda, and four Tunas.
We went out to 600 ft of water to try to catch some Golden Tiles; a long way to crank up but rewarding to catch, because these fish taste like Lobsters. We were successful in catching five of these Golden Tiles. There was one more objective to today’s excursion and that was to catch a Grouper so we put a live Goggle Eye down on one of the wrecks in 350 ft. of water. Rick was our angler again and with his own custom bent butt rod, after fifty minutes of tug-of-war, reeled in a surprising 190 lb estimated Bull Shark, which was released to fight again.
With a cooler full of good eating fish, it was time to head back. All the anglers relaxed in the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
