Galveston Fishing Reports
Many great things are happening on Galveston Bay, and our Fishing Guides are enjoying the fish catching excitement. The past week has seen some great catches of many species of fish hit the deck on our Galveston Fishing Charters. The key ingredient to the areas we have been fishing is wind speed and direction. During the month of March, winds can be high at times and our Galveston Fishing Guides will adjust the targeted areas to compensate for the wind conditions.
The granite rock reefs, we call the Galveston Jetties are an excellent producer during the Spring months for a variety of fish species, but primarily the Galveston Bay Snapper - also known as Sheepshead. The spawn is well under way and good numbers of Bay Snapper are making their way to the cleaning tables. Live shrimp has been the best bait. We are free lining the live shrimp on a #1 J-hook with as little weight as possible only to compensate for currents. Some very nice redfish are also falling prey to this tactic as well as some trophy caliber speckled trout.
Throughout the month of April, we will continue to catch good numbers of Bay Snapper as well as see more and more speckled trout and redfish as water temps continue to rise. The month of April can be a spectacular month to catch a trophy speckled trout here on Galveston Bay. Giant Black Drum, Bull Reds and also SHARKS will be caught during the month of April. Shark fishing in Galveston will continue to improve as we move closer and closer to Summer!
The Galveston Back Lakes and Bayous is a great place to be during the spring season here on the Texas Gulf Coast. These areas are a treasure to navigate this time of year. Alligators, turtles, many species of birds are calling these areas home during this time not to mention the fishing is amazing! We are catching mass numbers of redfish in the back lakes and bayous. Many of these fish are just under the legal size limit to retain, but we are still catching keeper size fish as well. Live shrimp under a popping cork has been the #1 tactic lately. There is always something magical for kids and adults alike to see a popping cork dissapear as a beautiful Galveston Red Fish finds its live shrimp meal just below! Some nice flounder are also being caught in the back bays and lakes as well as speckled trout when the water conditions are good. These areas will continue to produce good numbers of fish throughout the spring and summer.
