Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
September weather can be hard to predict, but the fishing and the scenery are always fantastic! All the hardwoods and pines are changing color, and the wildlife are on the move, eating and scavenging to prepare themselves for winter. You'll have a good chance at seeing bears, deer, the odd wolf and plenty of bald eagles. We even saw a cougar swim between islands last September.
In the fall, the fish are moving into their winter patterns; muskie and northern will chase the walleye and perch into deeper water. This is where the bigger fish like to feed as they prepare for the long winter. There'll be some aggressive feeding going on before they slow down and become dormant.
At this time of year, smaller fish can be caught with a jig and minnow, a jigging rap or even trolling a deep-running crankbait. Muskie and pike can be caught by jigging bulldogs or bondy baits; trolling larger baits works good for these big toothy beasts. By mid-August, crappie will start moving into deep water as well. A jig and gulp work best for them; they can't get the gulp off the hook, so you won't go through so many minnows this way.
The evenings are not as long as earlier in the season, but I always enjoy playing cribbage with Dave and Sheree and some of the other staff and guests in the game room. There's always a nice cozy fire blazing, the conversation is great, and I love just being able to make friends, and spend time with those I enjoy. A big reason September is one of my favorite times of year is because you have a chance at getting a fish of a lifetime. I hope to see you this fall!
