G'day <>,

From dhufish off Perth to red emperor in WA's north, fantastic fishing photos from the past week are pictured below.

Once again, fishers Joachim Azzopardi, Peter Fullarton and John Curtis have reported what is biting in the sections below from Broome to Esperance.

Also, we've taken a look back at a Scott's Species from earlier this month — red emperor. The insightful piece, written by Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan, is part of the Scott's Species series which provides a unique insight into catching many sought-after species found across WA.

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you know someone who would love to receive these reports and needs some help on the fishing front, forward this onto them! Join us here.

To help fishers stay up-to-date with fishing comps across the State, we've unveiled a new 'Fishing Events and Competitions' page on our website. If you've got a comp that you want included on the page, contact Recfishwest's Sedin Hasanovic.

Tight lines and safe fishing!

East Kimberley
A well-managed barra stocking program has transformed Lake Kununurra into a must-visit fishing location. See the highlights from the latest barramundi release, marking the one millionth fish stocked.

The 2021 Apex Kununurra Barra Bash

Want to win a brand-new tinnie valued at $13,000, even if you don’t land a fish? Well, the Apex Kununurra Barra Bash is giving you the chance! A F370 Quintrex Outback Explorer could be yours for simply taking part in the 23rd Barra Bash this weekend from 24-26 September. But that’s not all, Recfishwest have also sponsored a prize for the biggest barra caught on Lake Kununurra during the comp — a Lowrance Elite FS 9 Active Imaging 3-in-1 Transducer. The prize is being sponsored by Recfishwest through our East Kimberley Barra Promotion project, supported by the State Government’s Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund. Lake Kununurra is home to 1m-plus barra thanks to a well-managed stocking program which has seen more than 1 million fish released into the waterway since 2013. See what other prizes are on offer at the Barra Bash here.

Shhhhh, secret spot!

Yewww. Fishing last weekend's Pilbara Fishing Extravaganza, Jess Oudt landed many awesome species including this lovely red emperor. As a result, Jess was crowned champion female angler!

Boats

Excitement is building among Broome's passionate game fishers, following reports that a blue marlin was landed about 100 miles offshore on Sunday. The welcome news comes as sailfish and the odd small black marlin have been encountered closer to shore in waters off Barred Creek and near The Peanut. Spanish mackerel have been caught on bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled off Port Smith, Entrance Point and Gantheaume Point. Fingermark bream, bluebone, northern mulloway and threadfin salmon were among the species caught within Roebuck Bay and other inshore areas.

This Rankin cod was released to fight another day after Jade Relph caught it off Broome last Sunday.

Shore based

Barramundi activity has increased in the local creeks and the Fitzroy River as water temperatures in the systems continues to rise. A 1.12m barra caught in near Telegraph Pool was among dozens of 60cm to 90cm models to be landed in the river. Dampier and Barred creeks have lots of 40cm to 70cm barra on offer, as well as the odd fish getting close to, and just over, the esteemed 1m-mark. Pete Nielsen, of Broome Tackle World, has been doing well on mangrove jack and flathead in Dampier Creek. Queenfish and golden trevally can be targeted along Cable Beach and at Entrance Point. Take a look at our YouTube video from 2013, when Recfishwest joined Ewan Noakes for a couple of days during the Kimberley dry season as he went about chasing barra.
Exmouth catches
The billfish action off Exmouth has been sensational this week! 📸 Peak Sportfishing Adventures

Boats

Baitfish numbers are building in the upper areas of Exmouth Gulf and their presence has brought big numbers of sailfish to these waters. More sails have been caught off the west side together with black, blue and striped marlin. Spanish mackerel have been caught on the troll and by casting stickbaits near the Muiron Islands and the back of the west side reef. Giant trevally have also been caught on stickbaits, as well as poppers worked close to the reef edge. Reef fishers have been doing well on red emperor and goldband jobfish in the respective depths of 80m and 120m. Spangled emperor and golden trevally have been responding to a variety of lures within the lagoon.

Young gun Jamie Vogler got stuck into a couple of fun-sized Spanish mackerel off Exmouth this week.

Shore based

Spangled emperor have been caught on baits and lures between Tantabiddi and the lighthouse. Queenfish and golden trevally have been appearing in similar areas as well as near the tip of North West Cape. There are still lots of yellowfin whiting and squid being caught in the Exmouth Gulf. The lower areas of the gulf, including Heron Point and the Bay of Rest, have giant herring, blue bastards and permit on offer for fly fishers. If you're fishing Exmouth this week, be sure to visit our 'I Love Fishing' website for tips.

Scott’s Species – red emperor, a fish worthy of the throne

Mad-keen fisher Brenton Cartledge with a stunning red emperor off Dampier from earlier this year. 🎣

In case you missed it earlier this month, Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan took an in-depth look at red emperor for his ongoing and well-read series, Scott's Species. Often when visitors arrive in places like Shark Bay, Exmouth, Carnarvon and Onslow the first thing they want to know is where to find red emperor! Catch up with what Scott had to write about the much-loved red emperor here.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Red emperor, Rankin cod, pink snapper and breaksea cod have been found in depths of 30m to 50m of water off Kalbarri this week. More snapper and baldchin groper have been caught closer to shore along with the odd coral trout. Mack tuna and striped tuna are still present offshore, however, there have not been too many yellowfin tuna caught in recent weeks. Spanish mackerel catches have waned following a decrease in water temperatures.

Shore based

Tailor have been caught at Chinaman's Beach and Oyster Reef this week. Pink snapper, baldchin groper and spangled emperor were among the species recently caught from the local cliff spots. More pink snapper have been landed along the beaches near Wagoe Beach. A 42cm black bream caught in the upper reaches of the Murchison River was among dozens of smaller bream picked up in the system this week. Estuary cod were also caught near rock and other structure, while yellowfin whiting were found along the sand flats.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Reef fishing has been productive near African Reef and South West Bank where dhufish and pink snapper have caught in very good numbers. More snapper have been picked up in 40m to 50m of water north-west of the marina. Coral trout are sometimes being caught along the back of Pensioner Bank. Dinghy and kayak fishers have been catching skippy to 1kg, school mackerel and Watson’s leaping bonito not too far out from Point Moore.

Shore based

Surf fishers had to contend with seaweed deposited along many of the beaches, however, despite the challenging conditions they managed to catch tailor at Flat Rocks, the first and second points at Greenough, Drummond's Cove, Horrocks and Coronation Beach. Some nice catches of yellowfin and school whiting have been coming from Pages Beach. The northern side of the Batavia Marina has been producing chopper tailor, herring and pike. Pink snapper to 6kg are occasionally being caught from the beaches north of Coronation.
Lancelin catches
Kevin Mahney and Peter Fullarton, of Tailored Treks, had a terrific evening soaking baits in the gutters along the coast near Lancelin earlier this week, catching a couple of chunky tailor. 😁😁

Boats

Demersal fishers have been enjoying great results out from the 35m line, with baldchin groper making the bulk of the catch. Breaksea cod and dhufish have been caught inside of White Bank along the lumps and ledges. Boats anchoring up with a burley trail have been attracting skippy and pink snapper in the 10m to 15m depths. Lancelin's pelagic action has taken off this week, with schools of small yellowtail kingfish found around the inshore reef breaks. Around the 30m mark, bonito and tuna varieties are being caught. Kayak and dinghy fishers have great options within the bay, with herring responding well to lures. Snook have also been quick to chase anything in the water, including squid jigs. Squid have not been thick, but enough are around to make chasing them worthwhile.

Shore based

The beaches near Lancelin remain soft following the winter and back tracks do need to be used to pass some sections when the tide is up. Heading north, there is a lot of weed towards Narrow Neck and, as a result, this section has not been very productive. If you keep venturing north, the coast is fishing well along a range of gutters. South of Lancelin has been very clear of weed and is fishing well for tailor. Drone fishers are still catching the occasional pink snapper from the near-shore reefs, mostly up to 50cm. If you do not have a 4WD, the Edwards Island end of the bay has fished well for herring. The northern end has been producing sand whiting, herring and tailor in the early morning and at sunset.

Recfishwest YouTube | Chasing black bream near Albany

In 2013, fishing fanatic Jack Dawson let Recfishwest tag along with him as he chased black bream on foot in a couple of the Great Southern river systems. Read more about catching black bream here and find hints about fishing WA's lovely south coast here.

Esperance catches
With conditions favourable and safe for fishing off the rocks, Kjell Hensen was more than happy with this breaksea cod near Esperance. If you want to know more about safe fishing, click here. 🎣

Boats

Big sand whiting, King George whiting, herring, snook and squid have been caught by small boat fishers in close. Garfish have been caught within a mile or so from the shore in the evening. There are plenty of small Samson fish near the islands, which waters have also been providing queen snapper, blue groper and breaksea cod. Not too many crews managed to head out wide this week. But, once conditions improve, expect there still be schools of nannygai in 50m to 70m of water.

Shore based

Breaksea cod and harlequin fish have been caught by land-based fishers from the headlands near town this week, when conditions were favourable and safe for fishing. The Esperance Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty have herring, skippy, squid and King George on offer. Garfish have also been caught at both structures at night. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has been fishing well for King George and black bream. More black bream have been caught from the local lakes. Salmon are mostly being caught in their ones and twos at Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach and Roses. Schools of salmon were reported to have appeared at Alexander Bay and Duke of Orleans Bay last week. Fourteen Mile Beach has been producing small mulloway, while tailor are sometimes turning up at Roses.
Great Southern catches
Egi master Han Yeoh with a cracking kraken from Albany. Great squid, Han — we love your work! If you love chasing squid, be sure to join the Calamari Kings group on Facebook. 🦑🦑🦑

Boats

Deepwater enthusiasts who managed to travel to the shelf scored hapuka, as well as the odd blue-eye trevalla and grey-banded cod. The 60m to 80m depths off West Cape Howe and Denmark once again produced bigger catches of reef fish including breaksea cod, queen snapper, harlequin fish, red snapper, dhufish and pink snapper. King George whiting have been picked up in bigger sizes near Michaelmas and Breaksea islands as opposed to some of the other inshore areas. Sand whiting remain rather scarce inshore of Albany, however, there seems to be more squid around.

Shore based

Surf fishers have generally been doing well on bread-and-butter species including herring, skippy and sand whiting at Nanarup, Bornholm, Cables, Sand Patch and Lowlands. Tarwhine remain in big numbers along the coast between Denmark and Walpole. There have been bigger skippy of more than a kilo caught at Bluff Creek and Cheynes Beach. Salmon are a chance at Reef Beach and Fosters. The lower areas of the King and Kalgan rivers are the only possibility for black bream at the moment, while the water in each of the systems remains discoloured.
South West catches
Woahh! Fishing off Bunbury last weekend, Dylan Cooper achieved his PB dhufish. 📸 Alistair Cooper

Boats

Reef fishers have been doing well on pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod in 18m to 25m off Bunbury. King George whiting catches have been increasing through the inshore waters south of of the South West capital. Plump sand whiting have been picked up in big numbers in about 20m. Squid have been successfully targeted in 12m to 15m of water off Forrest Beach.

Purple-headed beast! 'Brownie' caught this monster dhuie while fishing off Bunbury with Tom Miller. 😎

King George whiting are being caught in very good numbers off Busselton, with dozens of 30cm to 45cm fish picked up in 8m to 14m of water this week. Squid have been fishing equally as well with boat limits sometimes being achieved in less than hour along the seagrass meadows in 4m to 9m. Pink snapper can be targeted early morning and evening along Four Mile Reef, while dhufish were picked up in 25m to 50m off Canal Rocks and Cowaramup Bay.

Shore based

For Bunbury fishers, tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings at Hungry Hollow, Back Beach, Belvedere and Buffalo Beach. Herring catches are slowly increasing along the beaches north and south of Bunbury, however, there are some nice skippy being caught from the reef and rock areas including at the front of the Bunbury Lighthouse. Black bream fishing has been improving in the Collie River. Farther south, surf fishers have been catching tailor some mornings and evenings at Moses Rock, Injidup, Point Picquet and Elmore Road. Herring remain in very good numbers along the west coast of Cape Naturaliste. There are lots of squid being caught from the Quindalup Jetty and the rocks at Curtis Bay. Scoop netters have been doing well on blue swimmer crabs east of Quindalup.

Freshwater

Watch the YouTube highlights from last year's FREE Troutfest event held at Drakesbrook Weir above.

Come and help release thousands of rainbow and brown trout into Drakesbrook Weir! Once again, we are partnering with the Shire of Waroona to host the fifth annual Troutfest community fish stocking event on Saturday, 2 October. Showcasing the South West and Peel regions’ great trout and freshwater fishery, the event will give the community the chance to help release thousands of rainbow and brown trout of various sizes. Find out more about this year's event and how you can hand-release trout here.

Exploring the South West's freshwater, avid angler Giordano Gervasi landed this BIG redfin perch!

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Beach anglers fishing the beaches to the south of Mandurah have been catching herring and the occasional tailor. There have also been reports of a few small mulloway up to 60cm. Dawesville Cut is still producing good fishing and will be a great location for youngsters to enjoy wetting a line during the holidays. Herring are the main catch, alongside tailor, sand whiting, King George whiting, tarwhine and the occasional big skippy. Locals suggest fishing the incoming tide for herring, with the tailor being caught at dawn and dusk. Around the river mouth you can get a mixed bag of tarwhine, herring and whiting. Bream anglers fishing the Murray and Serpentine rivers continue to catch and release good numbers of black bream. One angler caught and released one 45cm bream during the week. Small hard-body lures and soft plastics are accounting for most of the fish.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Crews made the most of the awesome boating conditions earlier this week and headed out to the 70m depths off Rockingham to target dhufish. Shoalwater Bay has been fishing well this week and produced herring, whiting and skippy for land-based anglers. Tailor fishers have found the beaches around Secret Harbour productive, but this is the only spot that seems to be producing these fish regularly in this region. The southern beaches have been turning on some tailor after dark.
Perth catches
This Samson fish pulled string from Rohan Black's reel off Mindarie last weekend. Nice stuff, Rohan!

Boats

Pink snapper remain in very good numbers in waters southwest of Rottnest Island. Dhufish have been caught in reasonable numbers in 40m to 70m of water off Hillarys. Breaksea cod and baldchin groper have also been picked in similar areas along with the odd queen snapper and harlequin fish. As proven below by Jesse Mouritz, pink snapper have been found in the usual north metro haunts, including off Two Rocks.

Think pink! Jesse Mouritz was more than happy with this terrific pink snapper from Two Rocks. 😀👍

Samson fish have been found near Rottnest where schools of yellowtail kingfish have also been frequenting. King George whiting can be targeted near The Windmills and in 10m to 20m of water off Cottesloe and City Beach. Squid catches are improving along the inshore seagrass meadows.

A 50cm beauty! Young gun Robbie Cobill, 9, was buzzing with this King George from Five Fathom Bank.

Shore based

Surf fishers are content with the tailor activity along the metropolitan coast where lures have been effective in catching fish in the 35cm to 55cm range at Grant Street, Swanbourne, Brighton Beach and Trigg Point. Similar size fish have been responding to mulies and scaly mackerel in the evenings at spots that included South Beach Groyne, Leighton Beach, Swanbourne Drain, City Beach Groyne and Floreat Drain. Herring are being caught along the coast, especially at the rock walls and jetties. If you want to know more about chasing herring, visit our 'I Love Fishing' website. King George whiting are a chance at the Fremantle rock walls where squid are also sometimes being caught, especially in the evening. Tailor catches are improving in the lower and middle reaches of the Swan River. Mulloway are a chance in the deeper areas of both metropolitan systems while black bream can still be found in the lower reaches following the recent rain.
