Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Rocky River was named one of the “150 Best Places to fish in America” in the June 2007 issue of Field and Stream magazine
The Rocky River is exhibiting elevated and muddy conditions again this week, and doesn't look to get better anytime too soon based on the projected weather forecast. Overall, it's been a rough spring for local river anglers with all the high water. Anglers can keep their fingers crossed and monitor the trend in river flow and temperature at the following link: Between storm events this week, local anglers had a window of good steelhead and lake-run smallmouth bass fishing in the Rocky River. Local angler Steve Nyetrae, who is retired and fishes the river almost daily when conditions permit, noted that many of the steelhead he caught fly fishing (an olive wooly bugger has been his best pattern) were dime bright and had not spawned yet. This observation is surely a result of the late, cold spring we've had. When the river calms down again, I would expect at least a few steelhead to still be around, as well as increasing numbers of smallmouth bass. Angler fishing a minnow or tube jig under a float, a baitfish stream on the flyrod, or a spinner or minnow plug have about an equal chance of hooking into a bass or steelie. Shadow Lake was stocked with 750 pounds of rainbow trout on Monday because the river conditions were not favorable, which concludes our regular spring trout stocking. In past years, we never had to put so many of these fish in the lakes due to unfavorable river conditions. We will be stocking Wallace Lake and the OEC fishing area with trout and catfish for our spring children's fishing derbies. The Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) recently stocked Hinckley Lake (2,500 trout) and Shadow Lake (500 trout), and Cleveland Metroparks stocked Ledge Lake with trout recently and has heavily stocked Wallace Lake on six occasions from winter through spring. Trout have been biting well this week on Power Bait in brighter colors, small jigs tipped with grubs (maggots or waxworms) under a small float, and small spinners. Spring Children's Fishing Derbies May 14 and 15. It's that time of year again for the annual spring children's fishing derbies! Bring your youngsters out to Wallace Lake on Saturday May 14 or Ohio and Erie Canal fishing area on Sunday May 15 for this free event. Bait and fishing gear is available to use for free if needed. For more information you can check out the following link: If you have a photo that you would like to contribute to the fishing report, or if you have any further questions regarding fishing in the Cleveland Metroparks, you may contact Aquatic Biologist Mike Durkalec at (440) 331-8017 or md@clevelandmetroparks.com . Good fishing, Mike Congratulation to 12 year old Charlie, who caught these fine steelhead in the Rocky River on April 30th on a white witch fly (photos courtesy of Ed Seibolt). A smiling Maggie holds her first trout, caught in Wallace Lake last week. She reports that she was cheered on by her brother Matt, sister-in-law Jen, and their dog Indy while reeling in the big fish (photo courtesy of Matt Hess). Beth and Nick were back at it again this week. Beth definitely brings her own brand of flair to the Rocky River steelhead scene (photos courtesy of Beth Horta). Pat accomplished an admirable feat on the Rock last week; he caught some nice lake-run smallmouth bass and steehead on the flyrod in the same day (photos courtesy of Patrick Campbell). Our old friend Gio is back to his old tricks again, too...catching just about everything that swims in the Rock! He reports that Justin Marconi, another regular contributor to the fishing report, is showing him the ropes of fly fishing, as well. From the looks of that fly caught chrome steelie Gio is a natural (photos courtesy of Giovanni Quintana). Dan caught 15 steelhead fly fishing the Rocky last Wednesday. He summed up some simple advice: "Don't fear the muddy stain" (photo courtesy of Dan Laubenthal). Hocking Tech student Joe Sheil has been assisting us with stocking trout all spring as part of his internship (thanks for the help, Joe!). We have been releasiing trout all around Cleveland Metroparks almost weekly since late March, so there are plenty of trout swimming around local waters waiting to be caught. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Cleveland Metroparks Fishing Fund Cleveland Metroparks Fishing Fund helps provide a rewarding fishing experience to Northeast Ohio anglers through the stocking of rainbow trout, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and other sport fish.
