More good canyon reports

The good canyon reports just keep coming. At Point Pleasant, Capt. Bobby Bogan of the Gambler came back from his latest trip on Monday night with yellowfin tuna from 30 to 70 pounds, albacore from 30 to 50 pounds,  dolphin averaging 4 to 7 pounds, and swordfish in the 75-to-100-pound class. He says almost every trip has included a sword or two -- most of which are being caught by anglers fishing for tuna rather than targeting swords. There are even some small tilefish for those who drop to bottom. Anglers should check with Bogan about some openings on weekdays.  weekdays.

Capt. Jeff Gutman had avery similar report from his last trip with the Voyager. He's also had some unusual catches this month, including a 285-pound bigeye tuna by Bob Goliash of Hampton; a 125-pound swordfish for Fred Cosentino of Staten Island; a 50-pound wahoo for Ed Palmer; and a 70-pound white marlin by Danny Kaplan of Brooklyn. The Voyager has some openings during the last two weeks in October.

Capt. Dave Riback reports the Queen Mary had good bluefish jigging today. Frank Strouse was high hook with nine up to 15.8 pounds on an Ava-27 with red tube.

At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Rob Senkewyc reported some keeper stripers among mostly shorts today on his Sea Hunter.

Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park noted that some stripers are being caught in the surf at night on black poppers and swimmers. Kingfish have turned on in the Island Beach State Park surf.

I took a ride from Bay Head to Mantoloking to look for swirls or bait on the smooth surface left by the northwest wind, but didn't see a thing. Only a few anglers were fishing in that stretch. However, Mike Commune of Brick recently weighed a 15-pound bass at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant after catching it in the Bay Head surf. Joe Melillo says there are lots of blackfish in Point Pleasant Canal. He hasn't been able to get green crabs lately, but clams are also working.

Allen Riley of South Plainfield got down to the Sandy Hook surf well before dawn to plug for stripers, but only came up with a small bluefish -- as did Lou Vargas of Fanwood and Ed Riley from Edison. Duke Matero of Piscataway released a short fluke on a teaser. There's still no sign of little tunny, and there was less bait in the surf than there had been.
