August Fishing Report!

 | By Seamus on 4/15/2013 2:30:19 AM | Views (263)

Well, August is here and the fishing is great. All you have to do is pick your Target Species. Whether it's Ladyfish,Redfish,Sheepshead,Tarpon,Bull Redfish,Speckled Sea Trout,Tailing Redfish,Spanish Mackeral,Bluefish,Black Drum,Sharks......and more they are all here and ready to be caught. The bait is prevalent with tons of food for the fish eat. Recently, I have been fishing these Tailing Tides for Redfish. Seeing the fish up in the marsh wagging their tails as they feed on crustaceans and crabs will make even the most mellow angler feel the rush of excitement as he sightcast to the fish. I have had both Flyfishing clients as well as clients that prefer to use a spinning rod, both are effective and exciting. My go to artificial bait has been the 4 inch New Penny Berkely Gulp with a 3/0 weedless Gamagatsu hook. You can put one of these daddies a couple feet from the fish and he will smell it and crush it. I have been using these as well on the low water and it is just great to be able able to have a light/weedless artificial that will not get hung up. The Redfish bite has been great and I have been using live bait:shrimp, crab, mullet, and minnows or artificials, whichever the client prefers. Both are effective and we have been catching them in real skinny water on the flats. The Trout bite is on and using floats with shrimp underneath them or artificials have both been really effective. This is one of my favorite fish to target and when the bite is on it's on! I have sat for Tarpon just a few times and ended up with just a bunch of big sharks. I fished a Tarpon Tournament with my fishing partner Colt Harrison and out of thirty something boats only one Tarpon was caught. I am looking forward to more action with them this month as well as during the mullet run. The Bull Redfish have been at the jetties and at certain inlets in which we have capitalized on and have been great fun. All in all the fish are here and all you have to do is pick your Target Species and we'll go after them. I could go on and on b/c the bite is on but I'll end my report here untill next time.  Captain Rawling Pratt-Thomas
