Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Well we've had our first cold front of the fall season. Nothing major but a noticeable slight drop in temperature - at least getting in the low 70s at night!!! The wind has been howling northeasterly the last few days, but it has sparked up some of the backcountry fall fishing. Pilchards have been prevalent around the islamorada shorelines and around many local islands, however many guys have been taking off early to get to the fishing spots and hoping to catch bait when they get there. Snook and redfish have been great in many areas. We had a large group of corporate guys in the fishing world along with a variety of sportswriters yesterday. Fishing was great all around. Capt. Clyde Upchurch reported lots of snook and a 100 lb tarpon around flamingo. Capt. John Johansen had some snook as well as did Capt. Bill Bassett. Capt. Rick Stanczyk had Steve Waters of the Sun Sentinel and his father. They went deep in the backcountry and got into a good amount of snook and some nice redfish as well. Capt. Jeff Beeler had some red hot early morning tarpon action off the beaches in the backcountry too. Capt. Jim Willcox has had some great redfish and snook action too, as well as a nice tarpon one day too. Yesterday the pilchards were so thick you couldn't lift the cast net after catching them and tarpon were airborne everywhere feasting on them!! It was a great event and hopefully will show how great the fall fishing in islamorada can be during our business 'off season.' Today fishing was pretty much the same, though much of the bait off the cape had disappeared in many areas, though tarpon were still around early busting some black mullet. Capt. Rick had a good bite of snook catching about 2 dozen as well as several nice redfish and some black drum. They caught everything on shrimp as they didn't catch bait beforehand and the bait in the back wasn't around as it was the day before, but no matter! Capt. Mike Bassett had good fishing too he found some pilchards and caught about 20 slot reds and 10 snook. Capt. Ben Ekblom had great fishing on a half day they had some nice mangrove snappers, big lemon sharks, and a few snook as well! This everglades fishing can be good all through the winter time, especially as it cools down more many of the redfish, black drum, and sheepshead move into the deeper creeks and it provides sancturary from the wind and weather for a very enjoyable, scenic day of fishing!
