11/1/13 November islamorada backcountry fishing report

Well it's time for november fishing in islamorada!  Capt. John Johansen has had some good reports while I was out of town.  He's had some good action with snook, a handful of redfish, black drum, sheepshead, and some tarpon as well.  He's also been getting some good shark action which is a bonus often while tarpon fishing.  Most this fishing requires a full day this time of year as we are running back to the mainland and beyond, often 30 miles or more.  Capt. John says patch fishing on the calm days is a great option this time of year, for snapper, grouper, porgy, hogfish, and more.  Pilchards have been the ticket for the snook since you can throw freebies to get them really fired up!  The creeks and canals that go up into the mainland hold lots of snook this time of year, as well as around the mangrove islands.  The tarpon have been eating pilchards well too, along with plenty of black mullet which are being pushed down the coast for the annual 'fall mullet run'.  Today the weather was flat calm - gorgous day - but the bait was tough early in the morning on the dead low tide back around the mainland.  We caught a mixed bag of jacks, ladyfish, snapper, and couple drum on shrimp.  We ran into the gulf and caught a nice tripletail, looked for some more but there were not many around oddly enough, normally with the nice water on a flat day you see plenty.  We did catch some big jacks off some structure, and we ended up coming back off the cape and catching plenty of mullet on the incoming tide that pushed them in.  Tarpon were busting them all over the place, we set up and caught 1 out of 2 tarpon plus a big 'mud marlin' and had a shark on for a while too.  November tarpon fishing in islamorada can be good if the weather and conditions are right!  We are suppose to be getting another front so winds should kick up, but the temperature drop should spark up some redfish and snook action, plus possibly some of the spanish mackerels - our usual fall florida keys fishing targets!
