1/11/14 January Offshore Fishing Report from Islamorada

 | By Seamus on 1/9/2014 11:15:35 PM | Views (104)

We had some rainy weather a few days ago, but the sun finally came out the last couple while offshore fishing in Islamorada. The fishing has been decent all around, but definitely a little better when the weather was more cooperative. The sailfish bite has been the same as the past few weeks, there's a handful caught and released each day. About 1/2 the boats each day will get in on the sailfish action. For the most part the boats catching them have had 1 - 2 releases, although the Pretty Work was on them yesterday and managed 5 releases. When sailfishing is producing a couple bites per day, the difference between a great day and a slow day is just capitalizing on your shots. There's still been some king mackerel around each day as well. I haven't seen any of the monster smokers like we had last week, but still some respectable fish in the 10 - 18 lb range. The bottom fishing has still been producing yellowtail snapper, some mutton snapper, as well as some grouper, but the grouper have to be released now until May 1st. They're still fun to catch though! There's also been some big bull sharks around the reef and wrecks, so if you want to test your strength ask about trying to catch one of those bad boys. The Gon Fishin V had a massive African Pompano today that weighed in at 42 lbs! The weather looks great the next few days and hopefully the sailfish bite gets better as the minor cold fronts move through. Give us a call in the office when you're ready to get in on the fishing action and we'll find you a great boat! 305 664 2461 for Bud n' Mary's Marina office.
