2/24/14 February Backcountry Fishing Report Update

 | By Seamus on 2/24/2014 2:30:49 AM | Views (47)

The weather has been insanely gorgeous the last few days and looks to be more of the same coming up. I had Sergio Furman and company out the last couple days.  The first day they also had Capt. Ben Ekblom, and today it was all of them on my boat.  We went 1 for 4 on tarpon yesterday plus several sharks, and Capt. Ben went 2 for 5 plus sharks as well.  That was fishing locally around Islamorada - plenty of fish around but they were not very happy that day.  We had the bites but was tough to get them to stay on there!  Today was a different story in the backcountry.  We caught mullet this morning and ran to the tarpon grounds.  Fish were rolling everywhere... first bait in the water we had a nice tarpon on within minutes!  After that we had to wait for a little while, but then we hooked a double header and caught both!  We ended up catching 3 more for a total of 6 tarpon on a 6 hour trip - not too shabby!  Plenty of other guides had good action today and the last few days.  Capt. John Johansen, Capt Perry Scuderi, Capt. Jeff Beeler, Capt. Bill Bassett, Capt. Jim Willcox, and Capt. Vinnie Biondoletti I know have all been having tarpon and shark action as well as some other large 'bottom dwellers'.  Angler Scott Erickson who fishes every year with Capt. Ken Cohan sent me a few pictures as well.  They fished several days and caught tons of fish a few weeks back, including a nice permit, several large gulf redfish, a baby african pompano, among many other things.  I'm off to jackson hole for a ski trip, right in time when the fishing is getting really good of course, but I need a break.  Looks like March and then on is going to be VERY busy for us!
