Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
We have had some unusually nice weather here in late April while offshore fishing in Islamorada Florida Keys. The last few days the winds have been 5 to 10 miles per hour and the seas have been very calm. We had another weak cold front pass through a few days ago, and the wind direction was a little odd for this time of year, swinging from the west and north. Some fish responded great to the wind change, but other fish didn't like it at all. The most exciting thing the last few days were the cobia! There has been more schools of cobia found the past few days than the last two months combined, and some monsters too! When fishing for cobia it takes patience, as the crew rides in the tower looking for big stingrays inside the reef, but the reward can be worth the wait if you're fortunate enough to stumble across them. The gold digger had one of the biggest cobia today I've ever heard of being caught at the marina, weighing a whopping 99 lbs! The Bn'M also had a big 74 lber! Also while reef fishing there's been a couple sailfish around each day, but it seems like they are thinning out each week. There's also been some mutton snappers, yellowtail snappers, black and gag groupers (released until May 1st), all while bottom fishing around the reef. The permit have been on some of the wrecks outside the reef, and most days have been producing fish, although a couple days they stayed deep and didn't feed well. Further offshore the mahi slowed down after the last little cold front. They did not like the north west wind at all, and although some boats had 5 - 10 fish, many boats haven't been finding them. The fish that were caught have been 3 - 15 lbs for the most part. When the wind goes back to the east we should have some more action with the mahi. The amberjacks finally showed back up on the humps, after they seem to disappear from the humps for about 10 days. The jacks have been anywhere from 25 lbs up to 80 lbs. When the jacks showed back up so did the sharks, and there has been some big hammerheads and tiger sharks caught and released the last few days. The boats that found floating debris also have had some wahoo action the last few days. I got out on two day time swordfishing trips the past few days and one trip was slow with no bites, but today we had 2 bites and managed a decent fish over 100 lbs. The next few days look great to go fishing in Islamorada, so give the marina a call and let us set up a trip for you! 305 664 2461
And don't forget to sign up for a fun dolphin/mahi tournament which we are hosting that takes place May 17th! We have a few boats available for charter still, so grab your friends for the competition. Visit www.gottaluvthem.org for more info
