Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
We are seeing some warmer temps that last few days which has sure felt nice! We look to have decent temps for a while, so this is a great time to get out on the ice and get after it.
Conditions aren't the easiest on the lake. We now have areas with larger drifts and deeper snow pockets. Best to have tracks of some kind, you can still get around with a truck, but a shovel and tow rope are very wise to have with you.
The bite...We have caught some beautiful walleyes this week! Numbers aren't always the greatest, but we are making up for it with some nice fish. We had a group double up on 27 and 28 inchers. We have had many that were over 20 inches and we released them back to swim another day. Seems like buckshots and PK spoons have been the ticket for these nicer walleyes. Tipped with a minnow head or a full minnow. Depths to fish in Devils Lake are really unique as there are fish super shallow and fish that are deep. Super shallow fish can be in 4-8 feet of water and we have caught walleyes out deeper in 18-30 feet. The bottom line is you need to try out various depths and figure out what works for you.
The perch are an interesting creature! One day we smack them the next day it's tricky. They are often a "spot on the spot" creature as well. The absolute key to catching perch day in and day out is to drill and cover ice. The more area you cover the better chance you have at finding that active pocket. Tungstens and ratfinkies tipped with spikes or waxies have shined many days. However, when looking for perch, use a more aggressive presentation to try to attract fish and find them. Also, there are days when you will catch the nicer fish on larger more aggressive baits. Again, mix it up and go off of what is getting you the best results.
Ice is overall good; however, just because we have had a lot of cold doesn't mean that everywhere is super thick. We are finding 15 plus inches in most places, but we have seen 10 in some areas. We have also heard of some sketchier ice near Rocky point on Creel Bay, so be careful and take your time. Drill and check conditions especially in areas you have not been to yet.
Good luck to all!!
