Pic of the Week!

There were a lot of great fish caught this week, but this PB 88cm barcheek coral trout on spear for Tim Mitchell @hereweareaustralia in crystal clear Shark Bay waters was hard to beat.

MARINE HEATWAVE POWERS UP PERTH PELAGICS
WA is riding a marine heatwave with ocean temperatures 2–3°C above average, sparking both challenges and incredible fishing opportunities.

The Rottnest Trench has been firing, with blue, black, and striped marlin appearing in numbers rarely seen in local waters, with 66 marlin seen over two days of fishing during the Perth Game Fishing Marlin Cup on February 15-16. Even black marlin have been seen in just seven metres of water behind Garden Island!

Last week's 79.6kg world record cobia landed aboard Jazz Charters near Rottnest sent the fishing world into meltdown, with the beast smashing the previous world record by 20kg.

There’s been a range of unexpected sightings and encounters on the back of the heatwave – manta rays have been spotted cruising through Cockburn Sound, a whale shark was encountered off Two Rocks, a pod of sailfish was seen off Fremantle, and a dolphinfish was seen beaching itself in Esperance.

Broome catches
28 years ago @jack_hambrecht was was doing the same thing with his dad and pop, now he's showing his daughter the ropes to continue the cycle, with three healthy barramundi landed during a great session near Broome.

Boats

Crews have made the most of the recent good weather and headed out to the reefs where they found good numbers of spangled emperor and coral trout, and red emperor out wider. Fishing in Roebuck Bay has been quiet, but tripletail have been active around the moorings. Bluebone have been picked up just off Entrance Point. Crab Creek has held barramundi, but Dampier Creek has been quiet too. Despite this it has produced some bigger specimens with a 92cm barramundi pulled out of there earlier this week. The westerly winds are sticking around but it should still be decent conditions out on the water this weekend.

Shore-based

Town Jetty has produced mostly bream and a few small trevally and queenfish. Willie Creek has held a few mangrove jack, while barramundi have been quiet in the Fitzroy River but cherabin have been plentiful. Entrance Point has yielded bluebone, along with queenfish and trevally.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Swiss angler @nicomoll6622 saves up his money for an annual trip to Exmouth each year to wrangle in some Spaniards with @maccydave and wish fish like this off the kayak we're not surprised he keeps coming back.

Boats

With clearer water and consistent weather patterns, fishing has improved. The west side has offered blue marlin out wide and a few black marlin and sailfish for those trolling inshore on the 100-130m contours. Crews targeting bottom species have done well on red emperor and Rankin cod in 70-90m, while goldband snapper have been in better numbers out a bit deeper. Spanish mackerel have been active in 30-50m and on Helby Bank, but sharks have been a problem at times so hold your rod when trolling and have the lures or baits closer to the boat. Drifting the lagoons with stickbaits and soft plastics has produced spangled emperor to 50cm. At the Muirons, jigs have accounted for red-throat emperor, Rankin cod and coral trout in 30m depths and a few Spanish mackerel have been about. Spearfishers have found clear water towards Long Island and have done well on coral trout. In Exmouth Gulf blue-lined emperor, golden trevally and school mackerel have been the main catches, mostly around the Shoals and on broken ground. Squid have been taken close in, but not in big numbers, while fly-fishers have caught giant trevally and small cobia on the offshore flats. Saturday morning looks best for a duck out in the boat with a lower southerly wind and swell. Expect both to rise from Sunday onwards.

Shore-based

It's been fishing heaven around the Exmouth Gulf flats lately, with @shallowwatersafaris putting their customers on to plenty of topwater queenfish action.

The tip of the Cape around to Bundegi has been fishing very well for giant trevally with plenty of 10kg models being landed on stickbaits. Ocean’s Legacy Keelings in 160mm and Salt Cartel 100g floating stickbaits have worked very well. Better spots have been Five-Mile, Hunters and Jacobs. Down at Tantabiddi there has been a few mangrove jack around the ramp and the odd spangled emperor in the lagoon. In Exmouth Gulf, better spots for whiting have been Bundegi down to Learmonth. Bundegi and the prawn farm have held a few squid, along with some decent trevally up to 60cm. The town marina has offered bream, the mangrove jack and small trevally, while Wapet Creek has held a few mud crabs along with bream and the odd mangrove jack.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing with a nice spango caught north of town in some pretty immaculate water!

Boats

Plenty of Spanish mackerel have been taken north of town on the 30m lines, along with a few sizeable yellowfin tuna and bonito. The mackies haven’t been monsters, with most around the 8kg mark. Sand Patch has fished well for mackerel as well and out wider a 20kg cobia was caught along with a few Spanish mackerel. Crayfishing has been good with many crews setting their pots then trolling for pelagics. It won't be comfortable out on the water over the coming days (especially in the afternoons and evenings) so the mornings are your best bet. Monday morning looks best at this stage.

Shore-based

There have been no reports of Spanish mackerel catches from the shore around town, but an 18kg model was taken on a balloon set-up at Wagoe. At Red Bluff tailor to 45cm have been landed, while bigger tailor, some around 65cm, have been caught at Siphons, the river mouth and Back Beach. On the other side of the Murchison River sizeable tailor and school mulloway have been caught. A decent baldchin groper was pulled up from the cliffs this week, believed to be at Pot Alley, where tailor have also been fishing well. In the river mud crabs have been in reasonable numbers around the marina and have been kept company by decent bream and small chopper tailor. Yellowfin whiting have been caught from the Sand Spit and at the river mouth.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
Some catch and release Samsonfish mischief for @mat.svenson off the kayak in Geraldton!

Boats

Crews trolling in 35-40m have picked up several tuna species and have found bursts of bonito action, while a shark mackerel close to a metre was taken at the end of the shipping channel. Bonito and Samsonfish have been close in too, with kayak fishers doing well on them just out from Batavia Coast Marina. It's not looking ideal with the weather over the next week with strong swells and southerlies, there might be a bit of a reprieve on Monday morning.

Shore-based

Weed has been terrible along the coast, severely limiting shore fishing. On some mornings Tarcoola and Pages beaches have thrown up a few tailor but not every day. It’s been a similar story from the rocks at Greenough River mouth. The rocks around Dome Cafe have held a few herring. The Batavia Coast Marina has been interesting. Its north side has offered herring, tailor and slimy mackerel up to 60cm, with the odd big cod coming up from the depths to nail a tailor that’s been recently hooked. Bonito have come withing casting distance of the marina’s rock wall at times, so casting metal lures could prove rewarding.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Big boats might find the new moon has pelagics on the chew, a run out to the FADs for a dolphinfish or a cruise along the White Bank trolling a mix of lures might see a few mackerel turning up. Small boats and kayaks have found the nearshore bays waters to be quite turbid, especially the south end which has made the fishing hard work. Venturing just to the north or south of the bay in 5-6m depths to clearer waters has seen better fishing, with sand whiting, tailor, tarwhine, skippy, squid and some great blue spot flathead to 60cm. The swell looks a tad harder on Sunday to launch and retrieve but Monday morning might be more favourable.

Shore-based

Recent swell and wind has stirred up the water, meaning early morning snapper have been great off the beach of late so find a spot near reef and burley up for the best chances. Drone drops 200-300m offshore have seen the snapper biting well into the day. The evening high tide has seen small whaler sharks, solid guitarfish, school-sized mulloway and some thumping big tailor. The jetty produced some tailor at sunset and the herring were biting throughout the night.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Mondrain Island has held Samsonfish to 20kg, while nannygai have been in good numbers at Long Island. Big breaksea cod and queen snapper have come over the side at Leg of Lamb, while big blue groper have been landed at Figure of Eight Island. Chapman Point has been a hotspot for sand whiting, while Flat Rock has yielded King George whiting and flathead. Esperance Bay has held squid, herring and snook. Saturday looks best out of the bunch this long weekend.

Shore-based

Gummy sharks and mulloway have been caught at Poison Creek, while skippy and gummy sharks have been in good numbers at Alexander Bay. Dunn Beach has fished well for gummy sharks and salmon, while Stockyards has offered big tarwhine and flathead and herring. Salmon have been caught at Fourth, Salmon and Observatory beaches, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has produced King George whiting and skippy. Squid have been consistent at the Town Jetty, while the town foreshore has held King George whiting to 40cm. Bream to 35cm have been prolific in Stokes Inlet.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches

Boats

Crews making the most of reasonable inshore conditions have been targeting King George Sound where herring have been thick. Squid catches have been inconsistent but good bags have been taken on some days, along with medium-sized King George whiting and the odd flathead. There wasn't much offshore action this week due to the conditions, but both days this weekend look favourable for the boaties, if you're going out on Monday try to get back in early before the wind spikes.

Shore-based

Plenty of small to medium-sized bream have been in the Kalgan River.  They have been skittish at times and prawn baits have worked better than lures. School mulloway catches have been reported from the Kalgan River as well. At Emu Point whiting and squid have been in reasonable numbers. Frenchman Bay and Whalers Cove have produced the Albany quinella of King George whiting and squid, although the KG’s have been on the small side. A few herring, whiting and the odd skippy have been plucked from among the pickers in the town marina, where the right-hand side has fished well for squid. Blue swimmer crab catches have slowed a little in Princess Royal Harbour and a few can still be found in Oyster Harbour, which has also offered herring and whiting on the flats. Salmon catches have been reported from Shelley Beach and the odd one has shown up at Sand Patch and Ledge Beach, which has held plenty of herring.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Trudy Morehouse @squidqueen.wa found a few cuttlefish among the hordes of squid off Busselton this week and they are apparently the better tasting of the cephalopods, with most reporting they are more tender.

Boats

Crews have been getting among Spanish mackerel out from Binningup and towards the Bouvards. The mackies he been widespread and have been found by crews keeping an eye out for working birds and baitfish. Trolling Halco Laser Pros and Nomad DTXs has been successful, while some crews have done well finding a bust-up and then sending out a live bait. A few shark mackerel have been about as well. Some very good King George whiting have been taken either side of Bunbury in 20-30m, along with some big skippy, and crews have picked up good numbers of squid on the way back to the ramp. Crabs have been firing in the Leschenault Estuary, from the back end down to the harbour, while trolling for chopper tailor has been productive, with plenty of herring in the mix as well. Geographe Bay has produced sand whiting, herring and some nice skippy, but King George whiting have been harder to find. Last weekend the bay was full of bonito but they have moved around the corner to Eagle and Bunker bays where they have been keeping company with small tuna. Sunday and Monday morning are looking best for a session on the boat.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting catches have slowed a little, but regulars wading the flats of the estuary have had no trouble getting half a dozen or so in a session. Vibes have been out-fishing surface lures of late. In the Collie River, bream and soapy mulloway have been scarce, but small giant herring have been taken on BassDay Suga Pens and stickbaits. Scoopers are still finding reasonable numbers of blue swimmer crabs and so are those diving for them, both in the estuary and out from the beach at the Bunbury Cut. The Cut has offered some decent tailor along with herring. Most anglers have been targeting them with half-mulies, whitebait or small Halco Twistys and Ocean’s Legacy Sling Shots. Back Beach has fished well for herring and chopper tailor, as has Dalyellup which has also produced garfish and yellow-eyed mullet. Squid are a chance from the shore there as well. Binningup, Preston and Buffalo beaches have held good numbers of tailor, herring and sand whiting. Busselton Jetty has produced decent squid this week, while Siesta Park and Abbey Beach have produced some nice yellowfin whiting at times, along with herring, small sand whiting and yellow-eyed mullet. Divers here have also been picking up blue swimmer crabs. Salmon reports have come from the Walpole area but they are believed to be resident fish.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Small surface-feeding rainbow trout continue to torment anglers at Honeymoon Pool. Tiny floating flies have been the latest method of targeting them, with limited success. Small redfin perch have been taken from the deeper, snaggy sections of the Collie River and also at Wellington Dam, where kayak fishers have the edge being able to cover more territory. Redfin have also been caught at Harvey Dam and they too have been on the small side.
Mandurah and surrounds
Dinner sorted for @mandurah_fisho after a scuba dive this week! The crays are starting to creep into the shallow reefs again so get out there.

Boats: Big Spanish mackerel and tuna have been smashing bait balls on the surface at the Mandurah end of the Bouvards, but so far hook-ups have been rare. On the finger reefs around the Five-Fathom Bank King George whiting either side of 50cm and chunky skippy have been plentiful, while there has been no shortage of plump sand whiting inside the Five. Squid have been taken in good numbers off Melros, in Falcon Bay and out from Seascapes. The Peel Harvey Estuary has very good water clarity and squid have pushed a fair way into it. Chopper tailor, herring and skippy have been in good numbers as well and most drop netters have had little trouble getting their boat limits of blue swimmer crabs. Sunday morning currently looks best on the forecast.

Land-based: The Mandurah bridges and the Dawesville Cut have fished well for squid, herring, chopper tailor and skippy and dab netters have been getting prawns at night as well. Bream chasers have found the Serpentine River is fishing better than the Murray, while in the Peel Harvey Estuary yellowfin whiting chasers have been getting good numbers of small to medium-sized models, but the bigger fish have moved out of the estuary and are swimming with sand whiting off the local beaches, so weren’t caught in big numbers. Some nice flounder and a few chopper tailor have been among the whiting bycatch in the estuary. Scoop netters have been getting good feeds of blue swimmer crabs, especially on the eastern bank halfway up the Harvey section of the system. On local beaches tailor generally have been quiet, but some good ones have been caught at White Hills. Most local beaches have held herring and sand whiting.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Spanish mackerel have been taken in Cockburn Sound and behind Garden Island. They have also been out towards the Five-Fathom Bank and plenty of bonito have been about as well, showing a liking for Halco Twistys and Richter Jelly Bean skirts. The Rockingham FADs have been quiet for dolphinfish, but they have produced yellowfin tuna to 15kg and the FADs further north off Perth have been more productive for the dolphinfish. Yellowtail kingfish have been in good numbers behind Garden Island and tailor have been active at Mewstones. King George whiting catches have been good at Mangles Bay, behind Penguin Island and inside of Garden Island, where plenty of skippy and herring have been caught along the causeway. Squid have been in a range of depths with Mangles Bay, most of Cockburn Sound and the inside of Garden Island fishing well. Drop netters have continued to do well on blue swimmer crabs in Cockburn Sound. Sunday morning should be the most comfortable window this long weekend.

Land-based: The good run of tailor on local beaches has continued and the sizes have improved with plenty of fish in the 40-50cm range and the odd one hitting 60 and 70cm coming from Secret Harbour, Long Point and Port Kennedy. Early mornings and evenings have fished equally well and 60-90cm mulloway, herring and sand whiting have been in the mix as well, but use burley to bring in the whiting and herring. Beaches at Secret Harbour and Golden Bay have produced pink snapper for drone fishers and there have been reports of small dhufish being landed as well. Challenger Beach and the grain terminal have offered yellowfin whiting and flathead and flounder, as did the Penguin Island spit and the back of the pond in Safety Bay. Land-based fishers haven’t missed out on the bonito action either with good fish being taken at Woodman Point, the Ammo Jetty and Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties. Halco Twistys have been getting the result. These locations have also offered herring after dark, a few skippy and small squid. Squid have also come from Point Peron, along with herring and sand whiting. Divers have been picking up blue swimmer crabs when swimming out from the shore from Point Peron right up to Naval Base.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
It has been Spanish mackerel mayhem this week off Perth, with the @sendnbend_sportfishing crew managing to land two in quick succession along with a belter of a yellowtail kingfish and even a longtail tuna. That's pretty much as good as a pelagic session can get!

Boats

There have been some very hot sessions on pelagic species. One crew around the West End of Rottnest Island picked up a 17kg longtail tuna, a 20kg yellowtail kingfish and two decent Spanish mackerel in under an hour. Spanish mackerel have been thick right along the coast from Fremantle to Two Rocks. Plenty of bonito have been about inshore off Fremantle and around the northern reefs. The FADs have been firing for tuna, dolphinfish and wahoo, while Stragglers has produced tailor. King George whiting and bonito. The bays at Rottnest have offered herring, King George whiting and squid, while squid have been inshore off Fremantle. The Three-Mile Reef has produced King George whiting, skippy and bonito. A nice mix of squid, King George whiting and big sand whiting has been on offer at the Windmills, while good sand whiting have been caught off Cottesloe and City Beach in 10-15m. The 5m-plus depths have been best for squid, which have been widespread, while 15-20m has produced the better King George whiting.  A few blue swimmer crabs have been picked up by drop netters off South Beach, while they have been good-sized and in big numbers in the lower reaches of the Swan River with Claremont, Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach the pick of the spots. A few tailor have been taken on the troll in the lower reaches. Both Sunday and Monday morning are looking best for the boaties on the forecast (how good are long weekends). Aim to get back in before it becomes windy and choppy from midday but Sunday morning is shaping up to be the best time.

Last minute change of plans for @saltfix saw him opt for a cheeky land-based session north of Perth. He saw a bust up of herring on the surface and it turned out to be this solid tailor stirring them up.

Shore-based

Plenty of bonito have been taken from the North and South moles, which have also produced 40-50cm tailor in good numbers. Herring and garfish have been about the Moles as well, and also around the rock walls in South Fremantle, where skippy have been about. Good tailor have also been caught at Catherine Point and off the Coogee rock wall. Leighton and Cottesloe beaches are always worth a crack for big tailor, while tailor catches have been good on the northern beaches with Quinns one of the more consistent locations. Floreat and City Beach have held mainly herring and small tailor, while slightly bigger tailor have come from Brighton Beach. Drone fishers have picked up modest-sized pink snapper and a couple of small dhufish from the northern beaches. A couple of 70cm-plus tailor were taken in the middle of the day from the reefy ledges between Quinns and Yanchep this week. Blue swimmer crabs have been picked up by divers swimming out from Bathers Beach and South Beach. In the Swan River, Alfred Cove has been one of the better night-time spots for scoop netters chasing blue swimmer crabs, while the East Fremantle area has produced good numbers of school prawns for dab netters after dark. Yellowfin whiting, flathead and flounder catches have slowed in the river, while giant herring have been very hard to find. The flats at Alfred Cove, Point Walter, Como and Claremont have been worth a go for chopper tailor and a few herring have been swimming with them. Bream and soapy mulloway have been caught up river from the Causeway to Guildford, with the odd flathead taken as well. Most of the bream have been caught around structure but a couple of good ones have been hitting lures on the flats. Sunday morning is looking best for a land-based flick with the early south-easterly wind.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
