Another Awesome Week in Hatteras

On Sunday I fished on a 30’ Ricky Scarborough boat named Smuggler and caught over 4 dozen dolphin.

Monday I fished on Magic, a 37’ Scott Briggs boat with some new friends. We started the day way down South and ended up 42 miles out in 1500 fathoms of water. We caught some nice gaffers to start the day. As we were bringing in a small gaffer, suddenly there was a big hole in the water as a nice 300-400# Blue Marlin inhaled it and made a short run before also eating the Pakula Lumo Sprocket on the starboard short. It came out of the water not 30 feet from the stern shaking its head, then back into the water and swam a big circle before charging the boat. The wind-on leader went through the rod tip and became the quickest release I have experienced to date, all in less than a minute. Unfortunately, it all happened so fast, I didn’t get a good shot with the camera.

We ended up catching some more gaffers and missed 2 White Marlin that came into the spread to take a look at the teaser. We were making our way back in and had just crossed into the green water, when I saw something from the bridge trying to eat the shotgun. Reeling in the bait as fast as possible, she missed it 3 times before coming tight. I got a good look at the girth and the big dorsal fin as her shoulders came out of the water, and knew immediately that this one was a lot bigger. After an hour fight we had her maybe 10-15 feet from the leader before she came unbuttoned. A heartbreaker for a fish that was an easy 500#s and most likely even bigger.

Thursday through Saturday I fished on My Striker, a 32’ Carolina Classic. On Thursday it was a little slow, but we found some Dolphin and a lone Blackfin Tuna. We did a couple of deep drops, but could only get the Blackbelly Rosefish to bite.

On Friday it was a little better. We ended up with 17 Dolphin, 1 Blackfin Tuna, and a Sailfish Release.

Saturday was slow and choppy with 4-5 foot seas every 4-5 seconds. We never found a good grass line, and only caught 1 of 2 Dolphin. It was around 11 and I was getting bored when I hear the port short pop with the Express in Black/Green and a horse. I knew this had to be a decent fish. Instead of dropping back, I reel it in, stopped, and as I start to reel in again, when I see a bill and a big mouth pounce on it. After a nice run and tail-walking, it turned and headed back toward us, zig zagging across the spread a few times, and still gray-hounding.  After about a 30-40 minute fight, we bring it boat side for a release. I am guessing between 200-250#.  I don’t think I will ever get tired of the shows these beast but on. It is just an impressive display of power and acrobatics, making it all worth it on a slow day.

Below is a short video of the last 2 days, including the release of both bills.

Anyway, the billfishing has been as good as it gets the last few weeks. I am very thankful to have fished with new and old friends and hope the fishing remains good after this blow.
