Boca Raton, or Boca de Ratones on the early maps from Europeans, can be translated as "Rocky" or "Rugged" Inlet. While known for excellent shopping and golf course, Boca Raton is also known for its fishing. With a spectacular lagoon for inshore fishing, many reefs along the coast for bottom fishing, and close proximity to the Gulf Steam, Boca Raton is one of the top fishing distinations in the US.
Offshore fishing from Boca Raton can produce good catches of Bonito, Blackfin Tuna, Kingfish, Mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), and Wahoo. There is also an excellent Sailfish run during the fall and winter.
Bottom fishing around Boca Raton can produce Amberjack, Grouper, Pompano, and Snapper. There are lots of reefs, rocks, and ledges around the coast making fishing easy. Many different inshore species of fish such as Cobia, Pompano, Redfish, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, and Tarpon can be found around Boca Raton.
