Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
At 80 miles long and 15–20 miles wide, Pamlico Sound is the largest lagoon on the US East Coast. Low barrier islands, known as Outer Banks, divide the sound from Atlantic Ocean. This row of islands extends 200 miles with some of the top locations including Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, Cape Lookout National Seashore and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered the sound in 1524 and mistook it as Pacific Ocean. By 1987, Congress deemed the sound as an estuary of national significance. Most of North Carolina commercial fish catches come from Pamlico Sound.
Atlantic Croaker, Black Drum, Flounder, Red Drum, and Spotted Seatrout are popular species you could catch while inshore Pamlico Sound fishing. You also have a good chance of catching Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel are also popular fish to target. Nearshore fishing from Pamlico Sound can produce Cobia, King Mackerel, and Bluefin Tuna. On offshore trips, you may reel in Blue Marlin, Blackfin Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, and Wahoo.
