Tarpon Springs may be an American city, but it has strong Greek influence. Located on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans. This has created distinctive cultural and architectural features in the city. The city has numerous bayous that feed into the Gulf, and local production has flourished with sponge diving off the shore. The city has focused heavily on beautifying the shoreline, and anglers have discovered why this city was named after a desirable saltwater fish.
As the name suggests, Tarpon Springs fishing is best known for Tarpon. When early settlers first chose Tarpon Springs, they noticed plentiful Tarpon jumping out of the water. Even today, Tarpon are still caught in great numbers near the shore. If you plan on inshore fishing in the area, then Tarpon should be on your target list. Other common catches include Flounder, Redfish, Snook, and Speckled Trout. Inshore fishing opportunities are plentiful with the numerous bayous. Plus, Anclote Key is part of the area, and this small string of islands has ample shoreline for eager anglers.
Tarpon Springs fishing is also possible with nearshore venues. The shore can be rather shallow along the coast, and there are various reefs and wrecks that attract fish. At these depths, you might bring home one of the many Snapper and Grouper species. Trolling the reefs and wrecks should produce Barracuda, King Mackerel, and Spanish Mackerel. At certain times of the year, the population of Cobia is also quite robust. Any of these fish make for delectable hauls.
With the Gulf of Mexico so close, it is no surprise that offshore Tarpon Springs fishing is also quite alluring. When you move farther away from shore, you can enjoy the bounties of the deep. Some of the species you might encounter can include Grouper and Snapper on bottom, and Blackfin Tuna, Mahi-mahi, and Wahoo on top.
