Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Happy New Year to everyone. It's been really busy here the past couple weeks, and I'm just getting around to writing my first January 2015 fishing report. Today we had a strong front, with pretty high winds blow through, but it just might turn the sailfish bite on for the boats that are out there. The last week we saw a few good days of sailfishing, where most boats had anywhere from 1 - 4 releases, but then there was a few days where there was just a few sailfish released amongst the fleet. The boats that have been putting in their time for sailfish have been rewarded for the most part. But if action with all sorts of fish is what interests you, there's been plenty of that as well! The king mackerel bite has been steady, with fish of all sizes from 5 lbs all the way up to 40 lb smokers! We also had a handful of wahoo caught the last week at the marina, some while kite fishing with live bait, and a couple while trolling articial lures. There's been a few blackfin tuna and a couple mahi caught while kite fishing and slow trolling live baits as well. The bottom fishing on the reef has been steady action most days. There's been yellowtail snapper on both the patch reefs (shallow reef areas in 15 - 30 feet), and on the main reef line. Of course there's been some mutton snapper and grouper mixed in as well, but remember that our shallow water grouper are catch and release now until May 1st. They inlcude our most common grouper like black, red, and gag. I made it out on a couple daytime swordfish charters the past week, and my first trip we had a few bites, but unfortunately didn't land any. Yesterday we did some deep water bottom fishing aka deep dropping, in over 650', and caught a few nice queen snapper, and a mosterous 42 lb snowy grouper! (Snowy grouper just re opened on January 1st, and is 1 per boat). After that we ran out further and caught about 100 lb swordfish our first drop! It looks like we might have a little wind this coming weekend, but I think we'll see some sailfish releases from the fleet with it! Give us a call in the marina office at 305 664 2461 to book your next islamorada deep sea fishing charter, and we'll get you set up on a great boat!
