Galveston Bay Fishing Report and Outlook

Galveston Fishing Report

Fishing in Galveston, Texas during the month of May is one of the most rewarding times of the year for catching a trophy speckled trout.  The spawning season has begun.  “Winter Fat” has not been ‘swam’ off yet.  Water temperatures are rising, just not at summer time highs at this point.  If there were a single month to choose for the average angler to catch a legitimate trophy speckled trout, I would choose… hands down, the month of May for Galveston Bay.

This month will find our Galveston Fishing Guides fishing the Galveston Jetties, West Galveston Bay Marshes and Back Lakes, and San Luis Pass.  The Jetties and key areas in the vicinity of the Galveston Jetty System are holding very nice speckled trout, redfish, Spanish mackerel, drum, sheepshead, pompano, and sharks are beginning to show up.  Live shrimp freelined along the jetties, or under a popping cork have been producing some solid specks, redfish, Spanish Mackerel, and more.

The Galveston Marshes and Bayous have been solid for nice slot redfish, and the fishing report could not be much better with the conditions.  The bayous and back lakes of Galveston are a great place to find refuge from the winds that can occur during this time of year.  This past week, we have caught limits or near limits of beautiful slot redfish when the winds have been blowing over 25 knots.  Though these conditions can challenge the anglers skill… the fish are there and hungry.  Finding the wind blown banks are a major key when winds like this occur.  The wind will push baitfish to an area and ‘pile’ them up.  Redfish will follow and it is a buffet for them.  A live shrimp under a popping cork or a live mullet drug along bottom is lethal when this occurs.

The San Luis Pass is hands down, my favorite area to fish during the Month of May when conditions are

right.  The approach to fishing the Pass is solely wade fishing for us.  Anglers need to be skilled, and somewhat independent, but the reward can be astounding.  Artificial baits are what we fish 90% of the time while wading, however live croaker can be tough to beat when tide movement and a “feeding window” is not occurring.  Live Croaker can intimidate a Speckled Trout to eat when they are not even hungry.

Shark Fishing in Galveston

This month marks the beginning of Shark Fishing in Galveston.  Our Galveston Shark Fishing Charters start now, and will get better and better with every degree rise in the water temperature.  Black Tip, Sand Bar, Hammer Head, Spinner, and more species of sharks will begin being caught this month in Galveston.  Check out our Galveston Shark Fishing Charters for thrill of a lifetime!

Galveston Deep Sea Fishing and Red Snapper Season in Texas

Galveston Fishing Report

We are very excited about our Galveston Deep Sea Fishing this year.  Our new boat, a 32 foot LOA Contender with twin 250 horsepower Yamahas is ready to go.  The Red Snapper Season for Texas and the rest of the Gulf States were announced this week, and Federally Permitted Charter Boats are getting 49 days of Red Snapper Season.  Our Red Snapper Fishing Charters are beginning to book up, and we are excited for the summer to begin.  We are already catching cobia, king mackerel, and some mahi, wahoo, and triple tail.  This is a great month to fish offshore for a trophy cobia, and limits of kings.  Also announced recently by NOAA Fishieries is the increase in our King Mackerel limits from two fish per person to three!  This is great news for our Galveston Deep Sea Fishing Charters.
