Anthony Mattarazzo was fishing hard bottom down the beach yesterday with Capt. Erwin Heinrich on Scales n Tales from Atlantic Highlands when he boated an 8 1/2-pound fluke. As if that wasn't a good enough day, he then added a doormat that tipped the scale at Twin Lights Marina in Highlands at 12.9 pounds. That fluke is being entered in The Fisherman magazine's 2011 Dream Boat Fishing Challange, and should move into third place in that coastal contest. A couple of fluke over 15 pounds from Long Island and New England are leading. The skipper lamented that the doormat didn't hit during last weekend's Sandy Hook Bay Fluke Tournament.
Also at Twin Lights, Dave Prybylenski weighed a 22-pound dolphin caught yesterday south of the Mud Hole. Trevor Russomano outfished his father while catching five keeper fluke.
Capt. Lou Grazioso joined Fish Whistle from Seaside Park to fish Chicken Canyon today. He said there was a decent bite of larger bluefins. Brian Baksa of Seaside Park boated a 57-incher.
Capt. Arthur Rhodes of Fintastic from Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant trolled the east wall of Hudson Canyon yesterday morning, but the only tuna hooked was lost. A white marlin was later released before he switched to tilefishing for a good catch that was 60/40 golden and gray tilefish averaging 7 pounds, with a top of 18 pounds. Today's sea bass fishing was slow, but he added a few ling in the Mud Hole plus four keeper cod along with 10 shorts at Shark River Reef.
Capt. Hans Kaspersetz tried for thresher sharks off Atlantic Beach this morning, but nothing appeared in the slick. One boat in the area hooked up before breaking off. Dave Marrazzo of Middletown was also aboard Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands along with his boys, David and Jake, plus Mike Fett and your reporter. The kids kept themselves busy catching short fluke and sea robins.
Capt. John Kolias of Reel Fun at Angler's Marine in Sea Bright put the Joe Keller party from Monmouth Beach into eight legal fluke up to 5 pounds Friday, along with 67 shorts. Peruvian smelts and squid strips were most effective.
Capt. Howard Bogan Jr.reports very good bluefishing Friday night in the Mud Hole. Those 9-to-14-pounders were caught again today on both jigs and bait from the Jamaica out of Brielle.
Capt. Chris De Stefano reports Frank Criscola's Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club fished the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Tournament for a yellowfin tuna and a white marlin release. De Stefano got out today with Harry Wild on his Strike Force from Brielle Yacht Club along with Bob Luce and Freddy Gronau to catch 14 keeper fluke up to 5 pounds at Sea Girt Reef.
