Capt. Chris De Stefano of Wall trolled a 93-pound wahoo Saturday in Toms Canyon to put Frank Criscola's Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club way out in front in that Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Tournament category. Crisdel also trolled 15 yellowfin tuna up to a 58-pounder. Capt. Paul Dalik and mate George Steller Jr were the crew, and the other anglers were Dr. Joe DePrestifillipo and Capt. John Magursky. De Stefano said he heard of some blue marlin and white marlin releases that day, but the runaway tuna leader was a 270-pound bigeye boated Friday on Low Bid.
Capt. PeteWagner, of Hyper Striper from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, took a Mearsk Shipping party bottom fishing 20 miles offshore at the end of the week to catch a dozen small keeper cod plus two in the 15-pound class. Some ling were added, and four big blues also hit on bottom.
Fluking has been poor since the hurricane, but Brielle Tackle weighed a 9-pounder caught on killies and squid just south of the inlet by Eric Polefka of Monroe Township. Dr. Jay Yuhas caught a 3-pound triggerfish in Point Pleasant Canal, and released some small blackfish. Greg Bogan notes that sea bass fishing on wrecks has improved since the storm.
Though bluefishing fell off to the north on Sunday, the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported lots of weakfish -- though most were undersized.
Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park reports 16-inch bluefish in the Island Beach State Park surf.
I saw a few scattered striped bass caught from a rough surf at Sea Girt early in the morning. I got a small one on a teaser fly in the wash, but no other hits.
