Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
It was gorgeous weather here the past couple of days while offshore fishing Islamorada. Since it's still spring time most of the boats have been staying near the edge of the reef, but a few boats ventured further "offshore" in search of some pelagic species. I'll start with today and cover the first three days of fishing in Islamorada in April. A handful of boats went offshore in search of mahi (dolphin fish), but they were few and far between. The Predator hit a pack of 3 fish, which all happened to be nice "slammers" in the 25 - 30 lb range, he also had a pair of big amberjack up to 50 lbs! The other boats that didn't find mahi concentrated on bottom fishing and all did decent. Since vermillion snapper season opened up on April 1st we have been seeing quite a few on the dock. The Bn'M had plenty of vermillions for dinner, as well as couple king mackerel, and released plenty of barracuda. The Man O war had a nice 15 lb snowy grouper (which is legal to keep now since it's a deep water grouper, not a shallow water reef grouper) , and they released a permit. Vermillion snapper are tasty bright pink snappers that average 1 - 3 lbs. On the reef there was a decent bite of king mackerel as well as a few other "day maker" (good quality fish, or gamefish) mixed in. The Reel McCoy had plenty of mackerel as well as a few snapper and at the end of the day landed a double header wahoo including a beautiful 25 lber on a spinning rod. The Fearless had mackerel, a lone big 25 lb blackfin tuna, and then ended the day by releasing the only sailfish out of the marina today. The Catch 22 had king mackerel, yellowtail snapper, a 25 lb cobia, and a big 15 lb mutton snapper. The Strictly Business did two half days and in the morning had a bunch of kids fishing and they had a blast, catching a dozen big yellowtail snapper, some triggerfish, and a few other snappers. Yesterday the mahi bite was better for the boats who focused on them. The spring time is still inconsistent to count on them all the time, but you don't know unless you go! Yesterday the Reel McCoy and Predator each had a nice catch of mahi, including schoolies and a few gaffers, the Reel McCoy also had a sailfish release. There was also some tripletail and wahoo mixed in on the debris that was found. The Kalex stayed on the reef and had a sailfish, a nice cobia and wahoo. The Bn'M did two half day trips. In the morning they had some nice king mackerel and a dozen big yellowtail snapper, and in the afternoon they had some vermillion snapper for dinner, a big kingfish, as well as some other species. The Man O War had a big cobia yesterday and a big 25 lb permit too. The permit are just showing up on the reef and should be around for a couple months, so if thats something your interested in, make sure to mention it to your crew. The Gon Fishin has had some great catches of big blueline (gray) tilefish the past couple days, with fish up to 10 lbs, as well as plenty of vermillion snapper and some yellowtail snapper. The Bn'M had little Jimmy out in search of "jaws", and by 11 am little Jimmy had caught and released a big tiger shark! The fish was estimated at 500 lbs and after the fight Jimmy was exhausted and even got sick, but he said it was well worth it. April shark fishing is great in Islamorada. The Catch 22 went daytime swordfishing yesterday and released 1 broadbill swordfish and missed a few other bites. The fish wasn't big but our saying is, "a sword's a sword". The Relentless has caught plenty of nice king mackerel the past couple of days as well as yellowtail snapper for dinner. Overall there's still a little bit of everything around, and if you want to chase a particular species you may have to put your time in. There's a few sails here and there, as well as wahoo, tuna, and cobia. Give us a call when you're ready to book your florida Keys fishing charter! 305 664 2461
