6-9-13 Offshore Fishing in Islamorada

Well I hope non of you cancelled your islamorada fishing trip because of that tropical storm that was supposedly going to affect us. We only had a few showers in the late afternoons/ early evenings the past couple of days, and today was sunshine all day till an afternoon sprinkle! We had some wind today, but the past couple days were very nice out on the ocean while deep sea fishing in June. A lot of boats fished the reef today, and it provided plenty of action. I believe most boats limited out on snapper, mostly yellowtail but there was a couple muttons hanging up too. Just outside the reef there was a nice color change, where the water went from green to deep blue, and there was quite a few sailfish seen on it. The bad news was that live bait was really tough to catch the past couple of days and only a few boats had a handful of live bait. The Pretty Work released one sailfish and two other boats reported hooking one but unfortunately pulled the hooks. If the condition continues tomorrow and the boats find the right live bait I wouldn't be suprised to see a few more sailfish release flags flying. But it is June and there's no telling what will happen overnight. The boats that went offshore today did pretty decent on the mahi. There was a mixture of schoolies (3 - 5 lb) and a handful of slammers (20+ lb) , hanging up behind the boats that were patient and stuck with it all day. The couple days prior the mahi fishing was decent. There wasn't many big mahi hanging up, but some boats found big schools of fish and had anywhere from 30 to 40 fish. Not all of the boats hit them well, and some boats found plenty of fish, but they just didn't want to eat. The boats would catch a couple of fish from each school and then the fish would stop biting. Now we don't catch a lot of billfish in the summer here, but we do catch a few trolling, so you never know when it's going to be your turn. Yesteday Strictly Business released a nice white marlin, the Cloud Nine released what is believed to be a "round scale" spearfish, and the Redfish released a sailfish. It's very unusual we see three different types of billfish caught on one day in Islamorada! On the floating debris there has been a couple wahoo and tripletail caught in addition to the mahi. The weather looks great the next few days to go fishing in Islamorada, so give us a call to book a trip! 305-664-2461

I think we will see more mahi the next few days offshore, (hopefully a handful of big fish mixed in), and the snapper bite should continue on the reef.
