9/20/13 September florida keys backcountry fishing report

 | By Seamus on 9/20/2013 6:55:13 PM | Views (331)

We've still had a mixed bag of fish in the backcountry this september.  A handful of guides are still getting out and things have still been fairly productive.  Often times the better fishing is early morning with the heat.  The past several days however we had overcast/rainy conditions which cooled off the water temps and kept the brightness down.  Fishing was overall pretty good.  Capt. Chris Daly reported good sightfishing for redfish and had a few shots at snook too.  Poling the flats can be fun this time of year.  Capt. Jim Willcox also has had some redfish and snook action in some other areas.  They also had some good fishing in the gulf and caught this cool baby african pompano!  Capt. Rick Stanczyk also reported some snook and redfish around flamingo islands and shorelines.  He also had some tarpon action one day catching 1 out of 2 fish, they found them another day however with the northerly winds that morning they did not bite but they had plenty of action with big lemon sharks and blacktip sharks.  Capt. Mike Bassett today had a good day catching double digit snook that were feeding great on live pilchards.  They also had nice overslot redfish and mangrove snappers.  Looks like it their may be some more rainy weather towards the end of the weekend, but this can be a good thing for the backcountry fishing.  The september islamorada fishing in the backcountry is still a good bet and nice time to go as you have the bay to yourself almost!  As we enter october the water temperatures start to cool down and we enter more of our fall/winter time fishery.  In the everglades this means good snook, redfish, black drum, sheepshead, etc... and gulf fishing for spanich mackerel, cobia, tripletail, blacktip sharks, and more.
