1/18/14 Backcountry and Patch fishing report january

We had another front come in a few days ago.  Temperatures dropped dramatically as it got down in the high 40s in parts of key largo.  The 1st day the fishing in the back was a little tough early in the morning as the water was temps were in the high 50s.  Eventually things started happening though.  Capt. Bill Bassett had a good catch of black drum, sheepshead, and some snook later in the day.  Capt. Jim Willcox and Capt. Jeff Beeler reported similar fishing as did Capt. John Johansen.  Capt. Vinnie Biondoletti, Capt. Chris Daly, Capt. Lonny Shaw and Capt. Rick Stanczyk had good catches out on the patch reefs including groupers, mutton snapper, yellowtail, mangrove snapper, porgy, and hogfish.  Capt. Vinny even caught a permit AND a bonefish out there which is pretty amazing.  Today fishing was good all throughout the day in the backcountry for the most part.  Capt. Rick reported good fishing around flamingo as well as the cape.  They caught 3 dozen snook, 15 black drum, and 1 redfish.  Capt. Jim Willcox and Capt. Jeff Beeler had good days in the everglades today as well.  Capt. Dave Sisung also reported catching a couple juvenile tarpon today while fishing around some of the backcountry islands, as well as limit of mangrove snappers, a few big reds, red grouper, and couple sharks. This was with Lou and Ralph from New Jersey.  Lots of boat traffic around being the weekend but they got it done.  The patch reef fishing was still pretty good today but not quite as intense as it was the day before.  The weather got very nice this afternoon in the morning you needed to bundle up for the ride into the backcountry, by this afternoon you could of been sitting on the boat with no shirt and a swimsuit - that's florida in the winter!
