Maine Outdoors - Winter Loosens Its Grip
By

The swing back to warmer weather is slowly but surely underway. Nature is taking its cues from the sun’s return to the north; as you can see in the photo the shift is dramatic. Back in late December the sun rose well to the south tucked to the right of the farm. Before long that sunrise will move out of our direct view entirely until next fall.

Still snowing lightly this morning and it is supposed to snow off and on all day. The overnight portion was a little less than predicted a nice refresh on our snow cover. The big news though is the temperature. Not over freezing but 27 which is close and well over the highs for the last few weeks. It almost feels like summer!

We have had a long stretch of cold weather this winter. Morning lows either side of 0 degrees Fahrenheit or even below and daytime highs in the teens. A few snowstorms have made the winter scene complete. This week is full moon and one of my favorite scenes is in view. Sorry no picture of it the camera simply does not capture the scene.

If you’ve been following the East Coast saltwater scene you’ve likely heard the talk on the docks: the Striped Bass fishery is changing. We believe in being upfront with our anglers so let’s address the reality.

Since Thanksgiving it has been cold here. Not Oh my how are you even still alive? cold but woodpile melting cold. Highs around 20 degrees and lows usually round 10 or so. Our New Years Trip to Eastport was marked by cold (around 0) wind and snow. The sea smoke on the morning of the 2 nd was a sight to see. This week though we are in the middle of...

Maine Outdoors - Woke Up to a Surprise Feature in National Geographic!

You can imagine my surprise this morning when I opened my phone to find my name and Maine Outdoors featured in National Geographic! An article titled You haven't been to Maine until you've visited these small towns was published today and highlights the true character of our state—the dirt roads the warmly lit inns and the people who make Maine...

It is fascinating how the universe presents related topics. I started my day discussing a difficult situation involving a now unlicensed and unethical guide. It was a stark reminder of how important professional integrity is to our profession and its public perception.
Maine Outdoors - No doubt winter is here!

I admit to being lulled into a vision that the warm comfortable fall would last longer. Say until Christmas. Clearly mother nature had other ideas though. Last week Argy and I enjoyed a vacation that included Thanksgiving dinner with family in New Jersey and other stops around the region. Like the fall up to that point it was warm and pretty much...

Maine Outdoors - An October Fish Story!

This morning was breezy and cloudy with the threat of rain on the horizon. Very similar to last Monday with water temperatures having fallen a little further. Last week my clients did well on bass pickerel and pike. I had nothing on my calendar and decided to take advantage of the conditions and see if I could do as well as they did. Keep in mind...

Aldo Leopold opens A Sand County Almanac with the thought: There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot. These essays are the delights and dilemmas of one who cannot. That sentiment really resonates with me.

Until today October has felt a lot like a summer month. Warm and dry with little wind. The leaves started to change color but the air did not feel much like fall. This morning though we were greeted with a spectacular sunrise followed by rain showers and a wind shift at high tide. The change is remarkable; the air has a chill to it and the breeze...
