Maine Outdoors - An October Fish Story!
By
Seamus
on 10/20/2025 12:19:03 PM • Views (1)
This morning was breezy and cloudy with the threat of rain on the horizon. Very similar to last Monday with water temperatures having fallen a little further. Last week my clients did well on bass pickerel and pike. I had nothing on my calendar and decided to take advantage of the conditions and see if I could do as well as they did. Keep in mind...

Aldo Leopold opens A Sand County Almanac with the thought: There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot. These essays are the delights and dilemmas of one who cannot. That sentiment really resonates with me.

Until today October has felt a lot like a summer month. Warm and dry with little wind. The leaves started to change color but the air did not feel much like fall. This morning though we were greeted with a spectacular sunrise followed by rain showers and a wind shift at high tide. The change is remarkable; the air has a chill to it and the breeze...

Maine Outdoors - GUARDIAN OF THE GIANTS / MAINE MOOSE DOCUMENTARY

I know that almost every client asks to see a moose in Maine. I always admit that while I have seen moose on many trips (even on the saltwater) it is always a special almost random moment. This documentary looks at the issues surrounding management of our moos herd and the approach being taken. Full disclosure I have worked with represented and kn...

A couple of weeks ago Argy spent some time in Little Deer Isle. I drove up for dinner one evening which was delightful and delicious. I had a commitment the next day and left right before sunset. Heading home I drove over Caterpillar Hill in Sedgewick where I was surprised by this sunset view. Granted pretty great.
Maine Outdoors - Pretty September Afternoon

I know I go on about how delightful this time of year is without much for proof. For proof here is a little video of less than a minute casting flies to feeding bass on a local pond. I know you did not ask but as an aside I have only seen bass push bait to the surface a few times in a long career and this was one of them. I could see the fish feed...
Maine Outdoors - September at last

September is here and it feels like the season is gently tapering down. Just last week I took a family with kids out for what I expect will be the last family fishing trip of the season and now the kids life vests are stowed away until next summer. My schedule which has been jam-packed for months is finally starting to show some openings.

Sorry no pictures it all happened too fast. Earlier this summer I told the story of an eagle picking up a surface lure that a young client was using. My season of odd bird stories is nearly complete after an osprey grabbed a bait that a young client was fishing the other day.

I've been having some trouble with my credit card reader lately. It's been balky and a few times this summer it hasn't worked at all. This is new because for years it was nearly perfect even taking payments when there was no cell service. To be honest most of my clients are wonderful respectable people so if it doesn't work they're happy to just p...

I really enjoy guiding families and seeing the kids grow and mature over the years. Trying and finding find their interests. Earlier this summer I guided one of those families and the daughter Maddie was along with her camera. I asked if I could have copies of a few and she was kind enough to send these along.
Maine Outdoors - It is true I just turned 70!

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. Pretty amazing to have reached 70. Yes I will be drawing Social Security soon (they tell me the middle of September). I have a very clear memory of being a young boy of maybe 7 or 8 and realizing that I might live to see a new century. Made it with another quarter century for good measure. The week has been g...

It is odd how things circle in life. Earlier this season one of my clients mentioned that turtles were a food source for bald eagles. I had not heard that but it makes perfect sense. Turtles sun on logs and rocks during warmer months while eagles fly overhead along waterways fishing. We see both on most freshwater fishing trips during the summer a...

Recent things in and out of the news have gotten me thinking about workplace credentials and when they are required or ignored. I have a few such credentials. First as a Master Maine Guide I have proven that I have the skills to safely take (and return with) members of the public into and onto the woods and waters of the state.
Maine Outdoors - What is your favorite trip?

Clients often ask about my favorite trip and I always respond that a family fishing trip is it hands down. Here in the middle of the summer I do a lot of family trips mostly with young kids but many where the children are older and sometimes the grands are included. I enjoy the young kid trips the most.

I knew this might happen at some point actually it even seemed likely a couple of times but it was the first for me yesterday. Fishing with clients for stripers in shallow water with big poppers wind was blowing but it was not especially rough just enough of a chop to limit how well the poppers showed up.

No doubt about there are relatively simple administrative tasks that it seems like would be a snap for a machine with half a brain.
