Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Well February went by pretty quickly deep sea fishing in Islamorada, but the good news is we fish 12 months a year here! I was out of town for the past week, but I got a few pictures the last couple of days and a few reports from the guys. Live baiting on the reef edge and wrecks has produced a couple sailfish, some king mackerel, a few nice blackfin tuna, a couple mahi, a few wahoo, etc. the past week. Not one thing has really been thick, but this is the time of year we start seeing a little bit of everything. The bottom fishing on the reef has been good when the current is running, but the days with no current made it difficult. When the conditions have been good there's been yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, and some mangrove snapper. The boats will start going further offshore the next few weeks to the humps, where there should be plenty of big amberjack, blackfin tuna, and sharks. We should also start seeing a few more mahi the next month as well, although they are usually more consistent in later spring. A few boats ventured out there recently and caught some amberjacks, a few tuna's, and reported losing some fish to sharks. If you want to catch something that fights extremely hard and will give you a run for your money, try catching a big old amberjack! Some other deep water bottom fishing has been productive too, "deep dropping", which is bottom fishing in 400 - 600'. It produces great eating fish like blueline tilefish, rose porgy, yellowedge grouper, and snowy grouper. It's a lot of cranking, but well worth it if you like to eat fish! These are deep water grouper and are allowed to be kept right now, unlike the shallow water reef groupers. Back near the reef a couple boats have been fortunate and caught a few nice cobia, but they have been putting in serious time looking for the stingrays. It looks like we have another small cold front coming through at the end of the week, so hopefully that stirs up the bite again here in Islamorada. Give us a call when you want to book a fishing charter and we'll hook you up! 305 664 2461
