3/17/14 Mid March Offshore/Reef Fishing Report

 | By Seamus on 3/13/2014 12:02:17 AM | Views (915)

We're half way through March here while offshore fishing in Islamorada, and it's spring time fishing! The spring months always give us opportunities at a little bit of everything. The charter boats have been fishing both the reef/wrecks as well as venturing further offshore into the gulf stream looking for migrating pelagic fish. On the reef there's been yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, cero mackerel, king mackerel, barracuda, a couple african pompano, a few sailfish, a couple schools of cobia, and plenty of grouper released. Offshore there's been lots of big amberjacks and sharks, a few mahi, a few tuna, and some good deep drop action (deep water bottom fishing) for tilefish, porgy, and some deep water grouper (snowy and yellowedge grouper are open now, unlike shallow water grouper species). There's also been a couple wahoo in the mix. The schools of permit are just starting to show up on the wrecks and reef as well, they have been tough to get to bite, but a couple have been caught. They should turn on soon. Variety is the name of the game this time of year, and you have to be ready for anything and everything. As weather conditions change so do the fishing conditions, so if one thing isn't working you should definitely consider targeting something else. A few really good catches lately include the gold digger catching a quadruple header of sailfish at the end of the day a few days ago! The Catch 22 also caught a few mahi one day, but one monster bull at 47 lbs! It is still early to count of mahi, only a few boats are catching a handful, but they should continue to get better and better. Give us a call at the office when you're ready to book your Florida Keys Fishing Trip! 305-664-2461
