Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
This morning has been a rainy day so far in Islamorada, but considering we've had some gorgeous weather conditions the past week it's ok. The old saying is, "the fish don't mind, they're already wet!". Lots of boats have been getting out on offshore fishing trips in Islamorada lately, and there's been lots of fish caught! Just like the last few weeks everyday has been different, and we are in the midst of our transitional period here where winter time fish are thinning out and summer time fish are just starting to show up. The dolphin fish (mahi) bite has been fair. Yesterday was tough for them, with only a couple boats catching them. Lots of boats hunted and searched for them, but they just aren't here thick yet. The two days prior though most of the boats caught some that put in the time for them. The fish have been from 3 - 15 lbs for the most part. Just remember it's on the early side for mahi in March! On the humps there's been some football blackfin tuna (2-5 lbs), with a couple big 15 - 20 lbers mixed in. Deep on the bottom near the humps have been the famous back breaking amberjack too. With fish from 20 - 50 lbs. Also while offshore in the deeper water the "deep dropping" has been productive too. The Gon Fishin V had an unbelievable catch of yellowedge grouper yesterday (they are a deep water grouper which is open for harvest compared to the reef grouper species). Joe, Long time customer and Friend of the marina was out with his family and they had 4 of them from 20 - 27 lbs! Also some blueline tilefish and rose porgy. On the Bn'M II we did a little more experimenting again and found some more golden tilefish way offshore, and of course Sara caught the biggest one at the end of they day, which went 37 lbs! Back near the reef the king mackerel turned on the last couple days, with fish from 5 - 20 lbs around the reef and wrecks. Also on the bottom there's been some nice mutton snapper, and then some grouper that have been released. Yellowtail snapper fishing has been productive too, a good way to have action and catch dinner! The sailfish were thin the last couple days, but there's still a couple around. And I almost forgot! the monster sharks are showing up, we released a giant tiger shark yesterday that was over 500 lbs as well as a big hammerhead and dusky shark! Shark fishing in Islamorada is a great way to catch something big and get a big pull on the end of your line.
