January February 2025 Newsletter

2025 is off to a flying start with some classic catches already coming across the decks.

We hope everyone has had a good start to 2025, and our thoughts are with everyone in SE Queensland who may be impacted by the incoming Cyclone Alfred.  Please stay safe.

Alfred has certainly made his mark on us here in Hervey Bay as we have now missed 17 days of fishing, with a strong wind warning current for the whole period.  In my 15 years of guiding, this would be close to the longest period we have been kept off the water. Thankfully we can see light at the end of the tunnel and we plan to hit the ground running from Monday!

The past few months we have seen a great run of broad bar mackerel. The broadys have been a great addition to the esky for anglers looking for a feed.

Golden trevally were also a regular stand out with some good sessions being had on jigs.

Bonefish continued with a few caught on jig and soft baits by guests.

The longtails have arrived with some great sessions already.

We thank everyone that has already joined us this year and hope to see you again soon.

For fly anglers, we had a few nice sunny days on the flats with golden trevally, grey bastards and queenfish caught.  Anglers also had shots at some big GT’s but they continue to prove to be a fussy and spooky customer on the flats.

The Months Ahead

As we see a change of season generally a low pressure system gets the tuna migration happening and we should see a big influx of longtail tuna in the bay.  The longtails drag in a whole heap of other action with mac tuna, Spanish mackerel, queenfish and cobia also moving in.

For fly and top water anglers we get some great opportunities, with aerial strikes and top water eats making for some exciting fishing.  With the top water comes opportunities to jig under the schools for species like golden trevally, mackerel and cobia.

On the flats we will see some longtail tuna and can be world class at times.  Big longtails hunting the flats is something special!
The southern flats will also be worth a look for fly anglers for golden trevally and other species such as grey bastards, GT's, queenfish and blue salmon.

Overall, Autumn is one of the fishiest times of year due to such a cross over period of species.   Before you know it, we will be targeting snapper - the year really is flying by!  If you are interested in booking a trip, we still have some dates available through Autumn for spin and fly anglers.

Winter 2025

Our winter season is filling fast don’t miss out at a chance at some Hervey Bay snapper. The shallow water gives a great experience as they fight all the way to the boat. We also have opportunities at longtail tuna right through winter and generally are bigger fish. Get in early and don’t miss out !
