San Diego was once known as the Tuna Fishing Capital of the World until the late 1970’s, with over 40,000 people employed in the tuna industry. However, it is still one of the best destinations to catch giant Yellowfin Tuna and is now known as the home of the Long Range Fleet, with many boats offering trips to anglers in the Mexican waters south of the border.
Offshore fishing San Diego and the Baja coast is productive for catching some of the largest Yellowfin Tuna in the world, as well as Wahoo, Dorado (Dolphinfish), Bluefin, and Bigeye Tuna. The late summer and fall offers the biggest Yellowfin cows. The Long Range Fleet can provide multi day and week long trips for a true fishing vacation.
Bottom and kelp bed fishing around San Diego waters provides excellent opportunities to catch Yellowtail, Sculpin, Sharks, various Rockfish, Rock Cod, Sand Bass, and Calico Bass nearly all year round. Halibut frequent the area during spring, fall and winter. Large White Sea Bass are thick during the spring and are often caught on squid. There is also good fishing for Barracuda, and Bonito in the summer.

Nighttime Tuna and Yellowtail We had some very fun fishing last night on some good grade Yellowtail and a 240 pound Yellowfin Tuna caught by Lisa! We are looking around the same area today. TEAM RP
Taka’s Tackle 16 Day! Happy New Year! We departed yesterday evening on our annual Taka’s Tackle 16 day trip. We have a great group of passengers and everyone is excited to be out on the first trip
Fishing Our Way Up Today was a great way to end a December five day! Good ling cod and Yellowtail action for everyone! We are now heading home and will be in tomorrow morning. TEAM RP
BFT Things started off very slow this morning. We did not see any tuna sign until after lunch. We got into an area and had steady action on Bluefin Tuna for everyone until sunset.
Night Time BFT Managed a few very nice Bluefin Tuna after dinner. We will be in a different area tomorrow trying for Tuna. TEAM RP
Mahi We spent today looking for Tuna and never saw any good sign of Bluefin or Yellowfin. Luckily there were plenty of nice dorado to go around for everyone. TEAM RP
Yellowtail Start Fun day picking away at Yellowtail working our way down the coastline. We will be farther down looking for Tuna tomorrow. TEAM RP
Ney Year’s Eve 5 Day Today we departed on the New Year’s Special 5 Day Trip! We spent the day getting all rigged up for the fishing the begins tomorrow. TEAM RP
