Hatteras July Report

 | By xfernal on 7/31/2016 12:00:00 AM | Views (1999)

The winds have steadily been rolling in from the South for a couple weeks now and the water is hot in the sound and right off the beach. With temps 85 degrees in the sound and blended water all the way out to the deep, it has made for some hot or miss fishing.

There is still good billfishing going on in Hatteras right now. Reliance went 2 for 3 on Blue Marlin one day last week, and several other boats including Good Times released them. There has also been a few White Marlin, but by far, the majority of billfish has been Sailfish. Albatross II released 3 sails on Thursday.

The offshore Blackfin Tuna bite in the last week has been decent around 230  Rocks. There has also been  few bailers being caught when a break or float is found. The Wahoo bite has picked up a little and there are plenty of Amberjack and Barracuda being caught while trolling for them.

On bottom, Black Sea Bass and Vermillion Snapper are being caught nearshore and plenty of Blueline Tilefish and some Snowy Grouper are being brought up from the depths. A few Yellowedge Grouper have been caught as well.

Off the beach, there have been lots of Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel still being caught. Inshore the Red Drum are being caught off the flats with several citations being caught in 4-6 feet of water.

With Flounder being caught in the sound during the day, gigging for them has continued to improve. A commercial guy had 30 the other night. We are also gigging more Sheepshead as well.

As the waters cool down, the fishing will improve, but even the hot waters are better than the cold inshore waters of the winter. Enjoy it while you can!
