We have some extreme weather on the way. This weather decreases fishing pressure greatly allowing the bass to feed up for the spawn and get healthy without being fished for. Nature protects itself in many ways and this is one of them. The bass can get into their prespawn areas and add weight so they can endure a stressful spawning phase. After th...

Ben went out to see how much ice we have grown in the last 2 days. He checked on spots along where the road normally is on the way to Center Reef. He found we have grown about 1/2 to 3/4 inch since the last report on 1/16. Ben drilled where there was no or minimal slush ice and found 14.5 to 16.5 inches. Where Slush ice is layered on top you can...

As many of you know I did a review on my St. Croix Avid surf rod a while back on this blog. That rod was great and served me well. One day last fall I was using it along some rocky dropoffs when I hooked a decent size striper. I was on a high perch and when I got the fish rear the rocks I did something really stupid.  I attempted to lift the fish...

Jerk Bait Time on Lake Guntersville The next two weeks will be some of the coldest days and nights of the year on Guntersville. Yes we've a cold front in January. No it's not strange but it is strange that we've only had one.  The weather has been spectacular and the fishing on fire.  There was a bit off a dip after the last cold front but the ship quickly righted itself and all is well now.  The species list has been long starting with bonefish and tarpon but adding to th...

January is off to an incredible start on Lake of the Woods—and the ice fishing action is only heating up. Anglers staying with us at Border View Lodge and Sportsman’s Lodge have been pulling in impressive numbers of quality fish with plenty of big walleyes coming through the ice. If January is any indication [...]

Ice is growing and the wind is blowing! Today (Friday 1/16) Ben drilled many holes in the same areas he did on 1/14.  Common ice thickness where he drilled today was 14 to 16 inches with 15 inches being the most common. Ben concentrated on checking where it was black ice. if you drill in the slush ice you will see more overall thickness in spots w...

OFFSHORE- Sailfish action picked up a bit this week from Palm Beach to Jupiter Inlet. No huge release numbers; but most boats putting the time in have at least been seeing a few fish. Conditions do look decent for the sails headed into Friday and Saturday. A few dolphin mixed in with the sailfish along with a few scattered Blackfin Tuna. Most of th...
